My neighborhood is unique in that it is a blend of older and newer architect-inspired housing. Being so close to the city centre, it is one of the earliest areas to be populated in the city. Akaroa, on Banks peninsula, makes an excellent day trip to see the French settlement and the interesting, volcanic geology of our city and its surrounds. There is still much to see showing the impact of the big 2011/2012 earthquakes. Also if there's time, a trip to the mountains - either Arthur's Pass or Hanmer is well worth it with beautiful scenery and hot springs.
