Cosy cottage with views of the River Severn
[nb. From mid March, light building works will take place on our farmhouse (c.30 metres from the cottages). We don’t anticipate this hugely affecting our guests, but the house will be scaffolded in part & there may be some unavoidable noise during the week. We have reduced rates accordingly] The Priory is a family home in a rural spot on the banks of the Severn. In its former cowshed sit 2 converted cottages; this one is well-suited to families with children, with both a master & twin bedroom. The south-facing French window entrance looks onto a traditional apple orchard, whilst the living / kitchen windows offer views down to the River Severn. The master bedroom has a generous king sized bed and in built storage (cupboard incl. a little hanging space). The ensuite has a bath with an overhead shower. Bramley products are provided throughout. The twin has two singles, a chest of drawers (and the option of a pocket sprung camp bed) if requested. The ensuite shower room is clean and functional, but definitely the cottage's achilles heel and lacks style. Both rooms Egyptian cotton bed linen and large, fluffy white towels (bathsheets, handtowels and bathmats). The cosy kitchen / sitting room has underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove (firewood included) for relaxing winter evenings playing boardgames or curling up in front of the television. And when summer arrives, prepare a feast of locally-sourced food on the barbecue, at the foot of the apple orchard. The sitting room has a smart tv with netflix included, radio and bose speaker. The kitchen has an electric hob/ oven, fridge (with small freezer compartment), dishwasher, microwave, kettle and toaster. For coffee lovers, either a cafetière or a Lavazza espresso machine (some pods for your first day or two provided) There is a small laundry room (with washing machine, tumble drier, ironing board and clothes airers) which is shared with the adjacent cottage. We provide eco-friendly cleaning products and a weekly clean for stays longer than one week. We're in a lovely spot and have plenty of recommendations - I can send you an app of our favourite places, just let me know. We also include a little welcome package with home-baked bread and local produce. When in season, please help yourselves to the fruits from the orchards - plums, pears and apples! Don't clean your car before you arrive - the farm track down to us is exactly that and you occasionally need a little patience whilst the cows or sheep move out of your way. The pot holes are also more prominent during wetter times of the year, so do come carefully. The cottages are entirely private with their own entrances and parking, though we are on hand if help is needed. Watch the famous Severn Bore at the foot of the garden or join the Severn-side public footpath - follow the river west to Bullo Pill, Newnham on Severn and lunch at the White Hart. Alternatively, walk east across the fields to the village of Awre with its Saxon church, working farms and the award-winning cider maker - Severn Cider. The Priory Cottages are on the edge of the Royal Forest of Dean, with its rich opportunities for walking, cycling and even treetop climbing Blaize Bailey viewpoint overlooks the famous meandering horseshoe bend in the River Severn and can be combined with walks round Soudley Ponds or a trip to Dean Heritage Centre (the Gruffalo’s forest trail particularly encouraging for littler legs). A marked route from Dean Heritage towards Wenchford also leads you to one of the Forest’s best Spring spots for great swathes of bluebells. Another honeypot of spring flowering are the tens of thousands of green winged orchid flowers populate Clarke’s Pool traditional hay meadow. But perhaps the forest is at its best in the autumn when the majestic oaks, beeches and larches turn golden and russet (The Cyril Hart Arboretum another highlight) and forest foraging unearths autumn fruits and fungi. The setting of the Priory Cottage is in itself a birdwatcher’s paradise, sharing its outlook onto the same waters as Slimbridge. Meanwhile RSPB’s Nagshead and Symonds Yat Rock - the best site to see Peregrine Falcons - are both within half an hour’s drive. Nationals Trust’s Westbury Court Gardens - the only restored Dutch style water garden in the country - is a ten minutes drive from the Priory. Carry on along this road for a further five minutes to visit the Severn & Wye Smokery (cafe, restaurant and an excellent fishmongers and deli). The Severn has an enormous tidal range so shift any expectations of wild swimming to the nearby Wye.
