Paddyfield Hideaway, Rural Tranquility, near Kandy
Paddyfield Hideaway is a small privately owned 'homestay', 40 minutes from Kandy, in the Central Highlands. Anyone seeking peace and quiet is welcome here. It is a relaxing and unpolluted haven not too far away from the busy towns of Kandy and Gampola. You'll see nice Paddy Fields worked by hereditary farmers, a small tea plantation, and jungles with exotic birds. It is ideal for couples, solo adventurers, and families (with kids). The first impression the hideaway makes on a visitor is not paddy fields but a lovely house set in a garden of beautiful flowers and a very green lawn. Enter the house, and then you see the reason for the name - a green paddy field attended to by a farmer at work surrounded by a flock of Egrets. Idyllic surroundings indeed. Guests have a choice of seasonal fruit and curried vegetables from our own garden. We also provide spring water from our own 'certified' deep tube well, and have our own generator in case of a power outage. Guests will have free run of the house and can mingle with other guests. Breakfast is included and other meals can be provided by Naomi, who cooks beautifully. There is a sitting room with good wifi, dining room, and a TV lounge with full cable TV. You will be looked after by Desmond and Naomi, who both speak fluent English, and have entertained many previous guests. Naomi's also happy to share her cooking skills with you! I may be there too, but do not live full time in Sri Lanka. My father however also lives in the house, and is a well known Irish Poet. This neighbourhood is utterly unique. You won't come across a single tourist and you will have the chance to interact with local jungle village people. There is a village close by which is totally devoted to drum making. There is also a Buddhist meditation centre half an hour's walk away. Tuktuks are freely available and Desmond will organise your transport requirements. You may enjoy walking, cycling or going out in our tuktuk through jungle and across paddy fields to three beautiful ancient temples- Embekke, Lankatilleeke, and Godaladeniya- that hold brilliant annual Peraheras, a traditional Buddhist spectacle well worth seeing from close up, in the month of September.
