It is true, we aren't a hotel, or a mountain hut, we aren't a purpose built B&B or a restaurant with rooms to let, this is our home which we welcome you into. A tradition that was first recorded in Kandersteg in 1658 as travellers rested in private homes before their trip across the Alps via the Gemmi Pass. Traditional alpine village with great access to the mountains. 3 cable cars within walking distance. Very quiet location. BY ROAD Visitors from Northern Europe will usually enter Switzerland at Basel either from France, south of Mulhouse or from Germany, south of Freiburg. From there, the route is straightforward, following the motorway towards (but not into) Bern then towards (but not as far as) Interlaken. Kandersteg is signposted from the motorway. If you use a GPS it is unlikely that it will find the house once you are in Kandersteg. It is highly recommended that you print the directions and bring them with you for reference! BY AIR The most convenient international airports served by budget airlines are Bern (Belp), Basel (Mulhouse), Zurich and Geneva. Bern is just one hour away and the others all about two hours by train from Kandersteg. Car hire is available at all airports. BY RAIL Kandersteg has a main railway location with easy InterCity access North to Europe and South to Italy. Kandersteg station is not served by a local taxi service. By road or rail we are within 'day-trip' distance of Bern, Thun, Gstaad, ThunerSee, BrienzSee, Interlaken, Grindlewald, Zermatt, Matterhorn and the Jungfrau region. The world cup ski centre of Adelboden is about 40 minutes by car or one hour by local bus. DIRECTIONS TO THE HAYLOFT 46°29'28"N - 7°39'50"E - it seems that GPS navigation systems do not always bring you to the house, using the directions below is the best way. As you climb up the valley to Kandersteg village you will go through a series of hairpin bends. Just after the last of these you will see a sign that says “ Kandersteg Zentrum”. Take this slip road off to the right and it will take you into the village . Once you enter Kandersteg it is only a five minute drive to The Hayloft! Alternatively if you come through the Loetschberg Tunnel on the car train you will leave the train already in the village. Once in the village you will see a large hotel on the right called “The Bernerhof” this is opposite a large open area on your left. Continue on the same road as it winds through the centre. The next open area of farmland on the left is just after a bakers and Italian restaurant. Once you pass this farmland you need to turn right. The small road is signposted “Allmenalp” and there is a stone water trough on the right, but probably more noticeable is a green bin on the fence on the corner. This road will take you over the river and under the railway. Follow this road as it winds. You will pass a large white building on the left and then a large house on the left also. At the next house on the left the road makes a sharp turn to the left. This is a blind corner. DO NOT DRIVE STRAIGHT ON. About 30 metres after this bend there is a small unmade private road across open land to the right. It is signposted on a street light “Dhammapala” also "Butschelsstrasse 56 - 74" turn right here. You can now see our house across the field to your right. Continue on this unmade road for about 100 metres until you see "The Hayloft" sign by the small bridge over the stream on your right. Turn right here……. You are almost at The Hayloft! FROM THE TRAIN STATION ON FOOT When you leave the train station turn to the right. Pass the KIOSK on your right. Do not walk towards the village centre. Across the road you will see a narrow road that passes the Tennis Courts and Ice Rink. Walk along this road that runs parallel to the train tracks. At the end of the road turn right under the bridge, with the train track above you. Follow this road as it winds. You will pass a large white building on the left and then a large house on the left also. At the next house on the left the road makes a sharp turn to the left. This is a blind corner. DO NOT walk STRAIGHT ON. About 30 metres after this bend there is a small unmade private road across open land to the right. It is signposted on a street light “Dhammapala” and “Butschelsstrasse 56 – 74” turn right here. You can now see our house across the field to your right. Continue on this unmade road for about 100 metres until you see the Hayloft sign by a small bridge over the stream on your right. Turn right here……. You are almost at The Hayloft! We look forward to welcoming you to The Hayloft soon.
