Cosy cottage (Pen Lon Las) is part of the east wing of Albro Castle workhouse situated in its own valley overlooking the Teifi Estuary. We are surrounded by beautiful countryside with the start of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path at the end of our lane. Poppit beach is a 15 minutes walk away and the Preseli Mountains a 20 minute drive. St.Dogmaels is a pretty village with a local produce market every Tuesday, brilliantly stocked shop for essentials and the Ferry Inn pub just a 5 minute walk form us. Pen Lon Las is a one bedroom wing of the “best preserved workhouse in Wales” (National Trust). We have renovated it to be as authentic as possible, changing original features as little as we can, repairing old doors and windows and exposing old paint colours on parts of the walls giving a deep sense of history and tranquillity. We've been restoring the building using traditional techniques of lime mortars and paints which are very different to modern plastics paints and plasters. Please be aware this is an old building with all its quirks and eccentricities! It has its own fully equipped compact kitchen, shower room and toilet, and dining/lounge area with solid fuel stove and double sofa bed. The separate bedroom is simply furnished with a double bed, chest of drawers and wardrobe. Background heating is provided by storage heaters but lighting the solid fuel stove makes the whole cottage really cosy and warm. Coal and kindling for this fire are provided free of charge which are stored in one of the former Vagrant cells close to the cottage. With care, the stove can be kept alight for your whole stay. The cottage has its own private space, a front lawn sloping to a small stream where you can have picnics or a BBQ. In shady corner under trees, there is a set of garden chairs and table. In Spring this lawn is covered in primroses with magnolia and cherry tree blossom. There are many ancient wooded footpaths leading from this historic iconic building to the village, shops, abbey cafe, pubs and beach. There is a local bus stop near the end of the lane from which frequent bus services can take you to Poppit Sands, around the coast to Fishguard and St David's or into the local town of Cardigan. One of us will greet you when you arrive and show you into the cottage and explain how everything works, especially the solid fuel stove. We will usually be available during your stay. St.Dogmaels is a pretty village with a local produce market every Tuesday, brilliantly stocked shop for essentials and the Ferry Inn pub just a 5 minute walk form us. The market town of Cardigan is a short distance away over the Teifi river, where there are many small independent shops as well as cafes, restaurants, Cardigan Castle, Mwldan cinema and supermarkets. Although we are not far away from many amenities it feels secluded here, once you reach us up the old stone track some people have said it feels like you've gone back in time. We leave plants and wildlife be here to grow and live how they want, it's very much their home as well as ours. Dogs are welcome but we ask that they are not allowed on the furniture, in the bedroom or left unattended in the cottage.
