Rigg End is a characterful Circa 17th Century detached cottage situated on the edge of a small hamlet in Upper Wensleydale. The cottage is very comfortable and tastefully furnished. The garden has a stream running through as well as glorious views. Red squirrels visit most days. There is direct access from the door to walks in all directions. The market town of Hawes is just 1 and a half miles away. Rigg End is ideally placed to explore and discover the stunning scenery of the Yorkshire Dales. The cottage is a restored former farmhouse which is very characterful, charming and quirky with exposed stone walls, wooden ceiling beams and some stone flagged floors. There are wood burning stoves in both the cosy sitting room and the large farmhouse kitchen. (Initial supply of logs provided for each stove). The kitchen is well equipped. The cottage also benefits from oil fired central heating. There is a large boot room/barn to the rear of the property with a separate toilet/ utility area. Upstairs there are 3 double bedrooms, all of which have open unrestricted views of the garden and fell. The bathroom has a bath, toilet and separate shower. All bed linen and towels are provided. The furnishings throughout are tasteful and include some antique pieces. The cottage is also home to original art work and pottery. Outside, the south facing garden offers a peaceful and private setting and has seating and tables to enjoy al fresco dining as well as the wonderful views. Please note that you can also follow us via our (Hidden by Airbnb) account rigg_end_wensleydale Burtersett is a small hamlet with a great community spirit. It is home to working farms as well as to permanent residents. Visitors come to enjoy the dale throughout the year. Situated one and a half miles from Hawes, it is easy to walk, drive or cycle into town but also far enough away to escape to peace and quiet. The dark skies are amazing. Burtersett also has an artists gallery and the resident artist is very welcoming. Rigg End is ideally placed for exploring Wensleydale as well as the adjoining dales including Swaledale and Wharfedale. The scenery is stunning at any time of year and the area is an outdoor enthusiasts paradise. The Pennine 3 peaks of Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent are within easy driving distance and many people challenge themselves to walk them all in a day. Nearer by, Semerwater in Raydale, can be accessed on foot directly from the door and this is a beautiful and quiet place which is home to one of only 2 natural lakes in the Yorkshire Dales. The Wensleydale Ice Cream Parlour is around 7 miles ‘down dale’ and the famous Aysgarth Falls as featured in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves are around 8 miles away. Bolton Castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned is also just a short and picturesque drive away. Richmond is around 20 miles away but certainly worth a visit as it has a great castle and a variety of shops. Middleham, also about 20 miles away has a fascinating castle as well as an active horse racing industry and the horses can be seen on the gallops above the village. We are fortunate to have a group of red squirrels living in the nearby woods and they visit the garden most days to feed. In the Summer we also have swallows nesting in the barn and we regularly see bats and owls. Curlews, Oystercatchers, Lapwings, Snipes, Short Eared Owls and Skylarks are all regular visitors to the fell. There are fantastic walks from the cottage in all directions for all ages and abilities. We provide a range of walking guides and maps for guests to borrow. The nearest Railway Station is at Garsdale - on the famous and stunningly beautiful Settle to Carlisle railway. This line gives access to Leeds and to Glasgow. The Community Office in Hawes operates 'The Little White Bus' Service which can provide transport to and from the station at Gardsdale direct to and from Burtersett. To book the bus call (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) during office hours , 9am - 5pm Monday - Friday. Outside of these hours, please call the driver directly on (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) Mainline stations are also accessible at Oxenholme (Kendal), which is on the West Coast main line, approximately an hours drive to the west. The East Coast mainline can be accessed at Northallerton or Darlington, approximately an hours drive to the east. Bus services also operate up and down the dale. Hawes is home to the famous Wensleydale Creamery as well as to Raydale Preserves, The Rope Makers and also The Wensleydale Pottery. The Dales Countryside Museum is also in Hawes and provides an interesting collection of local artefacts and insight into Dales life. There is a good selection of independent shops and cafes in Hawes as well as a variety of pubs. The town also has antique shops and a community owned petrol station selling fuel at competitive prices. The Pennine Way passes through Hawes and the area is also famed for it's mountain bike trails as well as road race cycling with The Grand Depart and other major international cycling events such as The Tour de Yorkshire coming directly through the dale and town. There are several big climbs for cyclists nearby including cote de Buttertubs and Fleet Moss. The cottage is accessed via a short track that is uneven in parts. If you have a very low car or very heavily laden car please take extra care or consider parking near the village green and walking from there. Guests bringing their own cycles can store them securely in the large boot room which is part of the main house.
