There are steps going into the camp, going into to the bathroom, and a dozen steps going down to the dock on the cove. Bears Den is in God's country. It's in a beautiful rugged part of Maine, but we are in the north woods 3 miles down a dirt road and up a rocky hill. The camp and surrounding areas are not accessible to individuals in a wheelchair or those who have trouble negotiating tight spaces. ( I am sorry for this, but it can't be helped) Please be sure to read thru the listing completely, and have everyone in your party do so as well. Please be sure to screenshot the directions, or copy and paste them so you can access them offline. Bear's Den is in God's country. It's an amazing beautiful place. The camp is wooded and very private, even though there are several other camps around. Across the street down at our beach, there is another beach that belongs to the camp next door, so you may see other people or families. Both the beach and the camp have outdoor fire pits you are welcome to use. There are ton's of activities nearby, and some wonderful stores and restaurants. The North Woods Trading post is the closest store and is on the way up to Baxter State Park. It has quick convivence store items, plus GREAT pizza, lobster rolls, and AMAZING homemade desserts as well as souvenirs and clothing. They also have a wonderful kids section! Next door is the Big Moose Inn with a nice pub and local brews on tap. Across the street is where the float plane takes off for sightseeing trips. It's an absolute must do!!!!! The NEOC has so much to offer in addition to River Drivers Restaurant. They Rent all sorts of gear, including Mountain Bikes and over the last few years they have created the most incredible Trail System. In downtown Millinocket you have the the Appalachian trail Café, The Scootic Inn and Ruthies Restaurant. A Few Museums and Art Galleries are a must on a Rainy Day If you choose adventure, there is White Water Rafting, Sky Diving, Pontoon Plane Rides, and so much more. You will definitely need a car to get around. I have plenty of parking at camp. You can choose to park up the hill near the front door, or at the bottom of the driveway Bear's Den does not have Wi-Fi. if you have Verizon with a hotspot that will work for you while you are here. If you're going to have a fire outside, Please be aware of the Wind , some days it's just not possible. There are many ways to help you start a fire, I can assist you with that, but Please do not pull the bark off from the birch trees! This act will weaken the tree and eventually kill it! Please bring your own firewood and fire starter (newspaper etc...) There are several places along the road after you exit 95, onto Route 157 in Medway, East Millinocket, or its available at the Katahdin General Store in Millinocket on your way up to the lake. Please let me know your ETA as soon as possible, and stay in touch as you travel if your arrival time changes. It's very important that I am there to greet you so I can explain the use of the Incinerator toilet, and the use of the new Hide A Bed, as well as show you around the property. If for some reason you beat me to camp, please do not use the Incinerator toilet without my instruction. I am asking guests to please bring their own sheets and towels, as we have no laundry at camp. But, If your arriving via plane, I've got you covered. Also, pack a pair of house slippers, the wood floors can be cold, and I have a no shoe policy in the Camp :) Please do not drink the water from the faucet or from the shower. This water is pumped up from the lake. We have a natural spring out on the golden road, and the directions are on the fridge. So please bring ample water to drink and cook with, and when your coming and going from town or Baxter, you can stop and fill up your jugs. If you are interested in fishing the lake and surrounding waters are full of Bass, Trout, Salmon, pike and more. Please go online to purchase a fishing license, or you can get one at the Katahdin General Store on Bates Street. I highly recommend that you grocery shop in Millinocket at the Hannaford before coming up to camp. It's on the way, and once you get up to camp you won't want to go back out. Believe me here!! It's a long way in and out on Deep Cove Road. If you're planning to go into Baxter State Park, you must do your research and be prepared. You need to call and reserve a parking space if you plan on hiking the mountain. Baxter does not allow pets, so you must make plans at Katahdin kritters in East Millinocket so that your dog will be taking care of during the day. Average hike up the Mountain is 8 to 12 hours, and it's not okay for you to leave your dog in my camp for that length of time. I am a dog lover, and I am happy to help take care of your pet when you climb if it's possible. We just have to arrange this prior to your stay. I also highly suggest you book a minimum of 3 nights so that you will have an opportunity to enjoy the lake, go for a paddle and a swim. I have learned that the extra day also gives you a second chance to climb in case of inclement weather. So remember to get the additional parking pass for the second day.
