Awesome nature just a short hop to central Accra.

Our house is on top of a mountain overlooking Accra but less than 25 min drive to centre.. good place to keep away from crowds and viruses. If you want natural beauty, an African experience, breathtaking views AND have big city on your doorstep? Then Papaye Lodge is for you. Its mountaintop setting + cool climate is less than 25 mins drive from central (Accra Mall) of Accra. Very good for families. These are some of the descriptions of the place left by happy guests.. Papaye lodge is a 'back to nature' type place. The most stunning feature is our wide open terraces where you can sit eating and drinking al fresco while admiring the incredible views of Accra below. At night it's almost mosquito free so for heath reasons a big plus. The lodge is a 'Back to Nature' type of place. If you want 24 hour mod cons, and cannot cope with occasionally having to have an african bucket shower or occasional power outages which are a normal part of life in Africa and many developing countries. PLEASE DO NOT COME TO OUR HOUSE. HOWEVER WE HAVE RECENTLY INSTALLED A BORE HOLE SO NOW NO PROBLEMS WITH WATER. We welcome people who can understand that living in Africa does not mean 24 hour/mod con 1st world style amenities. We have hot water, fully fitted new IKEA kitchen with microwave and all cooking utensils BUT as in all of Africa we can have problems with water and electricity at times. For this reason we do not have noisy pollution generators but rather solar lights for when there are power cuts and due to the high altitude of the property it is cool especially at night so there is no air-con as not really necessary.THERE IS NO AIRCON IN THE HOUSE. Wake up early morning to birdsong and lush mountains as you peep through your curtains. After breakfast on the terrace watching the sun rise over the hills descend down the steep hills to bustling, hot and dusty Accra. By evening return to the cool tranquility of Papaye lodge. You will literally feel the air freshen and cool as you once again ascend the steep slopes while watching the twinkling lights of Accra below. One advantage of this cool climate is there are very few mosquitoes at Papaye Lodge. So for health reasons alone this is a real plus. As in most of Ghana water pressure is not always very high so the water does not gush out of the taps but comes through more gently. Water has to be used more carefully than in the western countries. Internet modems and are on a PAY AS YOU GO basis and can be loaded up BY GUESTS for just a few dollars. INITIAL CLEANING OF FLAT IS INCLUDED HOWEVER AFTER THAT Cleaning is not included but you can negotiate him or his wife to clean your flat and wash and dry your clothes for a small fee. The apartment has two bedrooms and 2 adjoining bathrooms, kitchen, dining area and living room. It has a large terraces where you can dine al fresco or just sit sipping your favourite drink watching the sun rise over the mountains. The apartments is completely self contained within its own gardens. This is the BEST PLACE FOR FAMILIES as plenty of space to play around. The gardens are full of fruit trees, papaya, tangerine, lemon, lime, guava and banana and advocado. Bed linen is are provided. HOWEVER TOWELS ARE NOT PROVIDED. We are a back to nature type of place not a mod cons top notch first world outfit.. at times there are water shortages as in much of Ghana and you may have to bath in an african bucket shower.. but hey that is what travelling is all about... live like the locals.. if you feel you can't adapt to the african way...don't come to our place .... Papaye Logde is a place of natural simplicity. We have solar lights and due to its high altitude the weather at Safari Lodge can be quite cool, especially at night so that air-conditioners are not necessary. We are proud of our green approach to life in and around the lodge. There is a security man/gardener/housekeeper who lives on the premises with his wife and family. He will welcome you to the lodge and give you the key and show you around. If you have any questions he will always be there to help but he will not intrude and you will be able to live in your self-contained apartment with garden without having to interact with anyone. If you require a maid or cleaning service this can be negotiated directly with the housekeeper and his wife but payment must be made for this. The neighbourhood around Safari Lodge is spectacular. It has an african village environment, but is also part of Accra, being in the northern suburbs. The surrounding mountains are full of trails which can unexpectedly end up in a secluded village which seems stuck in time. Nearby is a mountian-bike hire company where you can take guided tours of the surrounding countryside on mountain bikes or just hiking. Aburi Botanical Gardens is just minutes away. Here you can find species of trees from all over the world. The immediate area has many great restaurants. Nearest is Aruba Guesthouse which has incredible dishes, Hillburi hotel and Little Acre. All restaurants are set in wonderful grounds with spectacular views over the mountains and Accra which you can only find in this area which is fast becoming known as the 'Beverley Hills of Accra'. Bob Marley's wife Rita Marley is a near neighbour and the Bob Marley Foundation carries out a lot of social projects in this area. Both Little Acre Hotel and Hillburi hotel ( both are just a few minutes walk from the lodge, have amazing swimming pools which you can use for a small fee. It is very easy to get to and from central Accra from Safari Lodge. Taxis and trohros stop at the top of our driveway and drive you directly to the town centre on a good straight and direct road. Papaye Lodge is great if you would like to explore the local areas and visit local Ghanaian villages. A guide will take you around pointing out local flora and fauna and you can go either on foot or mountain bike. Longer hikes and rides over several days can also be arranged. You can also take hikes to a lovely local waterfall. There are often local festivals around the area.
