Zen garden Please note to access the cottage it has steps at both the front and back and also retains its original winding staircase which is steeper and narrower than a modern staircase so the cottage may not be suitable for people with more limited mobility or small children. I like to give my guests space, but if they need me they can ring or text me anytime. Ferncroft is a beautiful Grade II listed Georgian cottage, located on the site of the great Siege of Gloucester which took place in 1643, during which the city held out against Royalist forces during the First English Civil War. It is located within the unique conservation area of Gloucester and is the perfect place to stay for the city’s numerous festivals, such as the Three Choirs, Victorian Christmas market, etc.. This peaceful retreat is just a stone’s throw away from the historic Gloucester Docks and the Quays shopping centre. Nearby is the bustling city centre, once a Roman municipality of Glevum, with oodles of Roman heritage and its famous 13th Century Cathedral, which has been used in several Harry Potter films. Beatrix Potter’s Tailor of Gloucester Shop is nearby and, of course, the Gloucester rugby ground at Kingsholm. King Henry II granted Gloucester its first charter in 1155 and in 1216 King Henry III, aged only ten years old, was coronated in the Chapter House of Gloucester Cathedral. Nearby are many interesting places to visit including the spa town of Cheltenham, Roman Bath, Oxford and the famous idyllic Cotswold villages, including Bourton on the Water, Bibury, Snowshill, the Slaughters, Painswick, Burford and Stroud. In addition to its own secure, private gated car park, Ferncroft is near an extensive network of bus, coach and train routes and stations. The cottage has steps at both the front and back to access the cottage and also retains the original winding stairs which are steeper and narrower than modern staircases so may be unsuitable for elderly, small children and those with limited mobility. The cottage is small and although sleeps up to six people is ideally suited the four people. The Aga is switched off in the summer but a mini oven is present for convenience.
