Surrounded by nineteenth-century buildings, designer shops, trendy restaurants, theaters and art galleries, etc. It enjoys absolute tranquility despite being in the heart of the city. Barrio de Salamanca is quite peculiar, both for its layout and for the neighbours whose homes used to sit in this most desirable area of Madrid. The neighbourhood was developed in the second half of the nineteenth century as an expansion planned under Queen Isabella II’s rule. The designer was Málaga-born José de Salamanca y Mayol, Marquis of Salamanca. He wanted to have an area for the exclusive residence of Madrid’s aristocracy and bourgeoisie. Barrio de Salamanca follows a regular grid pattern with parallel and perpendicular crossing streets. The carefully designed buildings here feature beautiful frontages that’ll catch your eye. Historically, Salamanca has been a residential area inhabited mainly by Spain’s financial and political elite. In the past fifty years, it has attracted diplomats, businesspersons and, together with them, sophisticated fashion stores. It is called Plaza de Colon, nearest metro station is called Colon. If you are arriving at Terminal 4 at Madrid Barajas airport you could take the cercanias commuter train to Recoletos (line C1) and Plaza de Colon is about a 5 minute walk. IMO this is the cheapest and quickest way. Cost is approx 3 euros and journey takes about 22 minutes, no changes. If you are arriving at another terminal you can transfer to T4 to connect with the cercanias by taking the airport transfer shuttle. If you opt to take the metro with just one change, you will need to take line 8, change at Mar de Cristal and take line 4 to Colon. Metro is clearly signposted in terminal buildings. . Airport Shuttle: Line 203 (Exprés Aeropuerto – Airport Express): The express line linking the Atocha train station and the airport. The bus runs 24 hours every day of the year. However, Atocha stop works only between 06:00 and 23:30h. Overnight, the bus stop becomes Cibeles( 2 blocks away walking distance is where our apartment is located in central Madrid and the bus gets renamed as N27 Exprés Aeropuerto. Easily identifiable thanks to their bright yellow colour, the buses seat up to 88 passengers and have ample racks for luggage. You’re allowed to bring on suitcases, bags and wheeled bags The bus goes every 15 – 20 min during the day and every 35 minutes during nighttime. The journey takes 30 – 40 mins. One way ticket costs 5€.
