Rock House is a cosy, traditional welsh cottage in the heart of the pretty village of Herbrandston. It has recently been restored employing traditional methods and preserving original features. Within walking distance is Sandy Haven, a lovely secluded beach with rock pools and a slipway. Close by are Dale, Marloes Sands and Martin’s Haven, where you can catch a boat to Skomer, famous for its puffins. The nearest towns are Milford Haven, with its marina and picturesque Haverfordwest. Rock House has been in my family for over 30 years. My parents bought it in 1982 and I have many happy memories of long summers spent here on the beach at Sandy Haven. As with all of us, the years took their toll on the cottage and unfortunately, when my elderly parents were no longer able to maintain the property, it fell into a state of disrepair. My wife and I decided to take it on and spent over 3 years in bringing it back to life, with a wonderful builder in charge of the painstaking restoration work. Everything was carefully researched; traditional methods employed and original features salvaged or recreated where possible, whilst still bringing it up to the 21st century. It has been a slow process but we think it was worth the wait. Rock House is now ready for a new generation to enjoy and we hope you will love it here just as much as we do. See what a recent guest blogger thought about the cottage and the area on her blog, Joli House, 'cosy cottage Wales' and 'a short break in Pembrokeshire'. Due to the difficult access to the Crog Loft, we have been advised that this area should not be made available to the public. We therefore use this for our store and we ask that you please do not access this space. Herbrandston is a fairly large coastal village, which, according to Wikipedia, derives its name from a Norman or Flemish settler in Pembrokeshire, named Herbrand, who settled here soon after the Norman Conquest. St Mary's church in the village contains a worn effigy of what appears to be a 14th-century knight holding a sword. Its tower has two levels; the third level, which contained battlements, was removed between 1740 and 1770. The village green, directly outside Rock House, was the site of an annual Hiring Fair, held on 12 August. These days the village holds a carnival on the green every summer, suspending the bunting from the gable of Rock House. Herbrandston is one of only 14 doubly Thankful Villages in the UK, in that all of the men returned home safely from both World Wars. ‘Herby Times’, the local community monthly newsletter, has details of local events, bus and church services. If a copy not available in the cottage, you may be able to get one from the local inn, the Taberna, which also houses a shop and post office. There is also a dentist in the village beside the play area on the green. Opposite Rock House there is a bus stop and shelter where you can catch the Puffin Shuttle and a lane leading to the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path. Ordinance survey maps are kept in the welsh dresser in the cottage should you wish to use them.
