Beautiful timber/stone barn c200 yrs old renovated in 2015 to a high standard, set on an organically/permaculture inspired smallholding in countryside close to historic town Athenry. Featuring a large double bedroom with 4 poster bed, a sleeping loft. Fully fitted Kitchen. Contemporary Shower room with Compost Toilet. In 2021 we've added a wood-fired sauna, cold immersion tank and hot shower spa area available for guests on one* night of your stay, subject to arrangement. Part irish cottage, part Scandinavian lodge, the Barn is a totally unique space made of timber, stone and glass. The interior is bathed in light from a huge roof lantern. The colours are calming and contemporary. The wood-stove warming and homely. Whatever your stressful lives entail, you will leave it behind and be rejuvenated after a few nights staying here! Sleeping - One large double bed downstairs, 2 single beds in the attic room in the apex of the building (height 1.8metres) The Barn was originally a thatched cottage probably built in the 1700's but was converted into a barn in around 1850 when the main house was built. When we bought the property the barn was a completely overgrown ruin with trees growing out of the walls. The current conversion was finished in 2015 and features a stand-alone highly insulated timber framed building within the old stone walls. We have used reclaimed/up-cycled materials extensively in the construction and furnishing of the barn. It also features rainwater harvesting, a compost toilet and low energy lighting and heating. We hope the honest approach in the design and use of materials provides visitor with a unique and beautiful space to enjoy for their stay. Someone will meet and greet all guests to provide access, keys and run through using the compost toilet etc. The Host's home is across the yard and is always on hand to help and provide guidance with travel plans during your stay. We encourage visitors to visit our garden and share our produce. There is FREE parking for up to 2 cars beside the Barn. The Barn is part of a group of buildings surrounding a farmyard, the opposite side of which is the hosts family home. We love to meet our guests and show them around our kitchen garden. Our poly-tunnel it usually bursting with produce and guests are encouraged to share whatever is in season. There's also fruit garden and orchard, chickens and quails. A selection of eggs are provided for visitors breakfast. Set on a small holding in gently rolling farmland on a quiet rural lane with convenient access to road and rail networks. Athenry with national rail and bus links is about 2 miles away. Collection can be arranged. M6 Dublin to Galway motorway is 2 miles away. The Coast and Galway City is about 10 miles. Athenry is a walled heritage town with many sites of interest and good restaurants including The Barracks. It is the closest town to Galway City which is easily reached by bus, rail or motorway ( in 25 minutes). The Wild Atlantic way is closest at Oranmore and is about 15km away. The host is a keen walker and maybe able to provide some guidance. I have clients/friends who have some of the best restaurants in Galway including Ard Bia @ Nimos, Aniar, Cava Bodega and would be happy to assist in reservations. Please note we do have internet and wifi in the main house but the Barn receives a very poor signal. We hope to improve this soon but take note this is a rural Ireland location were people come to get away from their chaotic lives. We will never have the Broadband guests have come to expect in their city centre homes! So best to relax and enjoy!
