The house is open to sky and has a little garden, terrace and corridor seating.Nestled in a quiet lane in Pondicherry, The House of Blue Mangoes takes inspiration from David Davidar’s book by the same name. Restored lovingly from ruins and rubble, the House is a seamless blend of classic Tamil architecture and pan-European sensibilities. The charming little 'thinnai' or sit-out at the entrance traditionally invites anyone passing by to relax and rest a while. A beautiful, open Tamil courtyard welcomes the first rays of the sun and offers the perfect spots to unwind, read a book, or simply do nothing at all. Chrome yellow walls and French beds are constant reminders of influences from across the seas. Every bit of furniture in the House is a carefully hand-picked piece of history. Our three rustic bedrooms - Kavya, Isaioli and Calanjali - are tastefully furnished with antique beds, cupboards and other things vintage. Of course, air-conditioning, geysers and comforts of a boutique hotel do exist, but they do not intrude. Still, nothing feels quite like home unless there's a friendly kitchen; so our fully-equipped cooking space lets you make your coffee and comfort foods just the way you like it at home. There are plenty of open spaces around the House, as you'll quickly discover; and if you wander across to the far end of the House, you'll be pleasantly surprised at what you chance upon - a garden spotted with tiny blue mango saplings. It is our hope that they grow up quickly to make the House of Blue Mangoes what we've always wanted it to be - a quiet place to perch under while the rest of the world goes on with its usual frenzy. There's no dearth of open spaces. Feel free to use our 'thinnai', lounge around the Tamil courtyard, open-to-sky corridor, terrace, patio and garden. There is also a fully-functional kitchen equipped with a gas stove, refrigerator, microwave, coffee-maker, toaster, essential pots, pans and cutlery. While we stay a stone's throw away from the House, we travel quite frequently. If we're in Pondicherry during your stay, we'll be sure to help you in anyway we can. In our absence, you can call us any time, and we will make arrangements to make your stay as comfortable and cozy as we possibly can. You are 400m from White Town, 900m from Aurobindo Ashram and Rock Beach. Located off MG Road, the apartment is every shopper's delight with its close proximity to Sunday Market, Mission Street and Nehru Street which are Pondicherry's "shopping districts". The best restaurants and cafes in Pondicherry are less than a 10 minute walk away. The Pondicherry railway station and bus stop are 2km away. Nilgris and Pothys, two of the best-stocked supermarkets in Pondy, are 400m away. There is a popular bakery just opposite the building and the most sought-after restaurants in Pondicherry are within a one kilometer radius. The most popular way to get around Pondicherry is to rent a motored two-wheeler like Honda Activa or TVS Scooty. Since Pondicherry Town's radius is only 2km, most places can be covered on foot, bicycle or by autorickshaw (tuk-tuk). To visit Auroville, we highly recommend renting a motorbike or hiring a taxi for the day as distances within Auroville are huge. We can help arrange for motorbike, taxi rentals and airport pickups/drops for you. 1. PARKING: The lane we are in is too small for cars to enter. So if you're bringing your car, you'd have to park on the adjacent or parallel road where you can find space. Parking on the road is generally safe and is common in Pondy since most houses / guest houses do not have a car park. If you're renting a bike, you can safely park it in front of the house 2. QUIET GROUPS: The apartment is suitable only for families / groups / couples looking to spend a quiet and peaceful holiday in Pondicherry. If you wish to host a party or are likely to be a loud group, please give our property a miss this time and do come back when you're feeling more Zen 3. EARLY CHECK-IN: An early check-in will depend on whether we have guests staying the previous night. If we don't, we'd be happy to give you an early check-in. In case we do, you're welcome to leave your bags with us and come back later for your check-in. When our manager calls you the day before your arrival, you can check with him/her on this 4. LATE CHECK-OUT: Our housekeeper will need to clean and prep the room for the next guest at check-out time. So a late checkout may not be possible. An option would be to leave your bags in the common area and to pick it up later
