Number Fifty-Nine is a peaceful, elegant bed and breakfast retreat just outside Cambridge. It is in the garden of our family home, a Grade II-listed, thatched period cottage located in the village of Orwell; you will be totally self-contained but we are on hand if you need anything at all. Above all, we want you to relax and feel at home. Number 59 is a luxurious, light-filled space for two but can comfortably accommodate three. There is a super-king Vispring bed which can made up as twin beds if preferred. A comfortable day bed, fabulous for lounging with a book, transforms into a full-size single bed. All the beds have soft and light duvets (anti-allergen) with crisp white linen, extra blankets and plenty of pillows. Black-out blinds and peace and quiet ensure a good night’s sleep. The house is calm and uncluttered but welcoming and cosy too. It is centrally heated and there is a thermostat to ensure the temperature is as you like it. There is instant hot water whenever you need it. There are peg rails and hangers and plenty of drawers for your clothes. In the bathroom there is a huge walk-in shower, plenty of hot water and fluffy white towels. You will have a mini kitchen with butler’s sink, fridge (and ice box), microwave, kettle and toaster. You can eat at the table inside or, if the weather is warm, outside in your own private space in the garden. Breakfast and welcome provisions will be left for you so that you can eat at your leisure; fresh coffee, tea and milk, fruit juice, granola, fresh fruit and yoghurt, lovely bread, homemade jams – and perhaps a homemade treat when you arrive. If there is anything you can’t eat, just let us know in advance. We have left a selection of books in the house for you to borrow while you are staying. The house is equipped with wi-fi and HD Freeview TV. Of course, you may prefer to just watch the birds! There is a parking space on the drive reserved for our guests. You have your own private place to sit outside but you are also welcome to wander around the garden which is on one of the few hills in Cambridgeshire – we have lovely views! We hope to greet you when you arrive but if we are not about there is a lock box for your convenience. If we don’t see you on arrival we will make sure to say hello and check that you have all you need during your stay. Should you have any concerns or questions, please ask – no question too small! Orwell is a lovely village an easy 15-minute drive from central Cambridge, outside the rush hour. It has easy access to the University, its Colleges and other attractions. In the village there is a small shop for basics and a pub (The Chequers) which serves good food. There are beautiful walks in all directions, many on the Wimpole Hall (National Trust) estate which you can reach on foot from the house. The area is popular cycling country and we are very happy to recommend routes for all abilities and ambitions and can offer support in terms of repairs, tubes, bidons and the like. Cambridge is a wonderful place to spend some time. We know it well and can give you lots of tips as to where to go and what to see – from the beautiful Colleges, museums and galleries to lovely independent shops and cafes. In addition to the wonderful buildings there are plenty of open spaces: the Botanical Gardens, Grantchester Meadows, walks by the river or along the Backs. We are also within easy reach of the science and research campuses at Babraham, Melbourn, Granta and the AstraZeneca biomedical campus at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Orwell is eight miles south west of Cambridge and easily accessed from the M11 (ten minutes from junction 12) and A1. You will need a car to get here and to get into Cambridge or to the nearby stations. There are quick trains to London every half hour from Royston, a 12-minute drive away. A slower train goes every hour from Shepreth which is five minutes away. We are very happy to give you tips on parking in Cambridge and routes into the City. There are plenty of places to eat out nearby or in town and we are always happy to make suggestions and recommendations. Many of our local favourites are now offering a take away service. There are also a couple of excellent delis nearby which offer delicious food to bring home and reheat. If you would like a massage or beauty treatment while you are here, we can recommend a lovely relaxing spa just ten minutes’ drive away.
