This unique cave house property was filmed on "Le Village préféré des Français" 2020, which featured Trôo. Perched high up on the hillside with full southern exposure, the Cave Yuccas cottage sleeps up to five people and offers stunning views over the village, river and valley. The Cave Yuccas heritage museum is below the cottage and offers visitors a chance to experience what it was like living in a 19th century troglodyte house. Or simply enjoy a beer or a café in the Cave Yuccas courtyard. Guests enjoy a completely independent and private cottage which sits above the Cave Yuccas heritage museum. The two storey cottage is accessed through a garden gate and is built on two levels. As you pass through the gate and walk up the path, the vegetable garden is to your left and the flower garden to your right, just in front of the entrance to the bedroom. An exterior staircase leads up past the herb garden to the wonderful upper terrace with spanning views over the valley, featuring a dining table for 6, two reclining lounge chairs, a wooden deck with a cafe table and two chairs, and the upper entrance to the house -- via French double doors opening on to the living room and kitchen. The cottage and terrace, situated as they are up above the Cave Yuccas, are protected from the sights and sounds of anyone below, allowing guests to relax in total privacy and enjoy the peaceful and quiet sounds of birdsong and butterflies humming in the garden. Pets are welcome with a 50 euro per animal fee, to be paid upon arrival to the property manager. Discover local farmers markets, chateaux, and vineyards, and explore this ancient troglodyte village along the Loir river by foot or bicycle. Nearby 12th century frescoed churches and hillside castles speak of the rich history of this area, once controlled by Richard the Lionheart. History buffs as well as seekers of the authentic French village experience will enjoy strolling around upper Trôo where remains of the surrounding fortified walls are visible, dominated by an ancient feudal mound and a splendid roman collegiate church. There are two entrances to the cottage, one leads into the bedroom on the ground floor, and the other entrance is up the stairs to the terrace where French doors open into the living area. Alain, the Cave Yuccas heritage museum guide, will be your host, and will be on site at the museum to greet you and show you through the house. Since Alain works every day from Easter to Hallowe'en, should you wish to chat with him or enjoy one of his delicious crepes, all you need to do is walk down to the Cave Yuccas. Excerpted from the "Small Guide to Visitors of the Exhibition Cave" by The association "Les Amis de Trôo": The origins of the ancient township of Trôo are lost in antiquity, but traces of its importance as a medieval "city" can be seen today by visiting the heights of the village, where remains are visible -- remains of a double surrounding fortified wall, dominated by a feudal mound and a splendid roman collegiate church. The hillside, now covered with greenery, reaches a height of 129 meters and was carved from rock in various layers, in which caves were dug to form many picturesque habitations in bygone days. Now there is a laze of little lanes and paths, plus ancient dwellings, arranged in tiers, rather like a wedding cake, all of which blend harmoniously into the landscape overlooking the valley below. In this valley, in the midst of meadows, the river Loir, fringed by poplars, drifts gently on its way. On the opposite bank, there is the tiny church of Sanit-Jacques-des-Guérets, once a haven for ancient pilgrims on "la route de la Compostelle" and which today is famous for its 10th century frescoes. Montoire-sur-le-Loir is 6 km from Troo and is where the farmer's market is held every Wednesday and Saturday in the central square. There is a bicycle rental shop very near the Post Office, and bicycling along the Loir is highly recommended, as it is relatively flat, and the road winds through beautiful villages off the beaten path. The fast train (TGV) leaves Paris from the Montparnasse station and goes to Vendôme, a 25 minute car ride from Trôo. Tickets cost from 18 - 70 euros each way, depending on the time of day and how far in advance you purchase them. You can buy your tickets at the station, but it is cheaper to buy them in advance online, pay with your credit card, and then retrieve them at the station at an automated ticket machine using the same credit card. Visit the SNCF site, and from the drop-down menus choose "Paris Montparnasse 1-2" as the starting point, and "Vendôme Villiers-sur-Loir" as the end station. You can rent a car from Avis and have it waiting for you at the TGV station in Vendôme Villiers-sur-Loir. Go to (Website hidden by Airbnb) to reserve. If you want to rent a car from Paris, try Auto Europe and pick it up at the airport or in the center of Paris. Note that bicycle touring is a wonderful way to explore the area. You can bring your bikes on the train and cycle to Trôo within a couple of hours. Taxi service is also available for around 30 euros. As the cave houses in Troo are dug into the south-facing hillside where they benefit from the fabulous view and continuous sunshine, the only access to the caves is on foot via charming footpaths. Parking is available at the church on the top of the hill (on your GPS enter "Collégiale Saint-Martin de Trôo"), and it's a 5 minute walk down hill to the Cave Yuccas. As the hillside is fairly steep, this property is best-suited for the physically fit.
