Moinho do Mar - Windmill Ericeira

Welcome to a restored old windmill (accommodates 4 pax) located at Ribamar, around 1 km from the well known surf spot beach Ribeira D´ilhas and 5 km from Ericeira. “Moinho do Mar” is a windmill with 3 floors, prepared to grind more than one cereal, namely wheat and maize. Its construction began in the final of the XIX century, and the laboring finished in the sixth decade of the XX century. After that it was transformed into a place of residence(URL HIDDEN) This mill is located near RIBAMAR, in a small private property (900 m2 surface, surrounded by an outside wall), about 45 Km (by highway) from LISBON airport and 5 Km from Ericeira. The pretty villa of ERICEIRA, with its several small and lovely beaches, has been, in October 2011, officially recognized “Natural Reserve of Surf”, by the Save the Waves Coalition, being number one in Europe and the second in the world. Amongst the nearest beaches of the mill are the famous surf beaches of “Ribeira de Ilhas”, considered one of the best places for surfing in the world, “Coxos” and “Foz do Lizandro”. A little further away are the beaches of “São Lourenço”, “Canada”, “S. Julião”, all of them protected by rocky mountains. In the villa of MAFRA, about 11km distant, there is the monumental “Palácio Real de Mafra” and “Convento de Mafra”, constructed by order of the king D. João IV, between 1717 and 1740. At 25 km is Sintra, a romantic villa - which gave a warm welcome to Lord Byron - that has been immortalized by several Portuguese writers. In that villa is interesting to visit the “Palácio da Vila”, the “Castelo da Pena” and the “Castelo dos Mouros” and the wonderful surroundings. For playing golf, the “DOLCE CAMPO REAL”, in Torres Vedras, is about 30 minutes from the mill, to the north. The MILL 3 floors, fully equipped with an amazing view over the sea, mainly from the top floor and from a pleasant terrace. •On the ground-floor, uneven, is the kitchen/dining room and the bathroom with a shower and hairdryer. The kitchenette, the china closet, a small closet and the bathroom have been excavated from the thick outer wall. In this floor, you have all you need to cook and eat - a small stove, a small fridge, a microwave, tablecloths, etc. •On the first floor is the double bedroom, with a dresser, a clothes’ closet and a smaller one, both excavated in the gross walls. Bath towels and bed linen are provided. •On the top floor is the sitting room, with two studio sofas and a gambling table. A small balcony, excavated in the wall, allows you to be sitting at the window turning to the sea. Others facilities •3 millstones tables around the mill, 2 in the lawn zone and another in the paved space (portuguese sidewalk – the famous “calçada”) under a big fig tree. •Going down to a bigger leisure lawn zone, there is a small swimming pool (only in summer), coal grill, arm-chairs, deck-chairs, sunshades and a garden shower. •At the left side of that zone is the private apartment of the host couple and the remaining open area. •The access to the terrace is made by stairs, immediately after the entrance, at left and on the top of the apartment of the host couple. It’s worthwhile to go there, even at night. In general, check-in should be done after 14h and check out before 12. However, if possible, this may be flexible. Please let us know your check-in/out preferences in advance to arrange things in the best possible way for everyone. The windmill is next to the owners house and, although they do not live there, they occasionally can attend this house. The windmill is located near Ericeira - often called the Portuguese Mecca of Surf - has become one of the best known surfing destinations in Europe. The town was honoured as the first European surfing reserve due to the constant swells and excellent breaks its coastline offers. There are waves during the whole year, in winter even big wave riders find their ultimate challenge and in summer its never too small to throw an aerial 360. Besides of offering excellent conditions which attract more and more people each year, Ericeira has managed to remain its charm. Ericeira continues to be a typical South European fishermen village proud of its long history, which dates back to the Phoenicians and got its Charter in the 12th century. Ericeira is also famous for its gastronomy. On weekends mainly people from near Lisbon visit Ericeira's restaurants looking for fresh fish and shellfish. Beach, Sun, Surf and Relax In summer Ericeira is a tourist resort of excellence. The water might be a bit colder than the Mediterranean and the climate a bit rougher, but the beaches, washed daily by Atlantic waves, offer cleanest water and unpolluted air rich in healthy mineral salts. Evenings in Ericeira start with a great meal in one of its many restaurants. The windmill is just a short wall from great restaurants offering fresh fish from the grill or seafood dishes in one of the "Marisqueiras" are specialties of Ericeira's gastronomy. Typical recipes like "Sopa de Cabozes" (crab, whiting-pout and mussel soup), "Caldeirada" (a rich fish, shrimps and mussels stew) or "Arroz de Marisco" (crabs, lobster and clams rice stew) are a gastronomical must to try. But you'll find also a great variety of meat restaurants, Italian cuisine, Sushi and of course pizza, burgers and toasts. Sintra and Mafra If your plan on staying longer consider visiting the historic cities of Sintra and Mafra. Those cities offer great opportunities for practicing other sports such as golf and biking. Arriving at the windmill by car from the airport is fast and easy: Leaving the airport, turn right at the big rotunda to “2ª CIRCULAR” (first exit on right) and after --- km head for highway A8 at the exit saying LOURES, MAFRA and TORRES VEDRAS. After 17 km, there’s the indication ERICEIRA, MALVEIRA, MAFRA and you turn right to the highway A21 for another 22 km. After the tool-gate you arrive at Ericeira. In the first rotunda you take the direction RIBAMAR, RIBEIRA de ILHAS, TORRES VEDRAS. After about 2 km, after passing another rotunda, you arrive at a third and last one, near the sea. You turn right in the direction RIBAMAR, TORRES VEDRAS and after 3 km is a plate saying RIBAMAR. Looking right you will see the MILL with its white round wall and red windows. Immediately after this plate there is a secondary street, you take it through the right and after you turn right again in the second street (Rua do MEIO), you continue some meters and it’s there (n.º 15) It’s in the first wood large gate. Guests should contact our team 45min before arrival and go directly to the apartment. Arrivals from 23:00 (11pm) to 06:00 (06am), a late check-in fee of EUR 30 shall be applied (paid in cash at check-in). All guests must provide their ID or Passport Information at the time of check-in. All the remaining payments must be made in cash. Transfer Service - We can provide a transfer service for an additional cost. Lockers - We have lockers available at the Welcome Centre in Lisbon for an additional cost. Amenities - We provide toilet paper and shampoo only for the first day. Baby Friendly - We can provide a baby travel bed upon request.
