Historic Townhouse in Central Cockermouth
12 Kirkgate is a unique, historic townhouse in the heart of Wordsworth's Cockermouth, close to excellent restaurants, take-aways, bars, antique shops (and auction), art galleries and all amenities. Cockermouth historic town trail starts less than 20 metres from the front door. Everything about this house breathes space and calmness for small or large groups. There is plenty of room for your outdoor gear, including easy and secure parking for 8 bicycles. Bedroom 1 is a stunning feature bedroom with a 5-feet wide bed. Bedroom 2 has a substantial desk and one or two single beds (the second is stored under the first when it is not needed - please request it if you'd like it set up). If you are working while staying at 12 Kirkgate this room can be used as a study instead of as a bedroom (although one bed will still be there). The stairs to the attic bedrooms 3 and 4 are steeper and narrower than ordinary stairs. Bedroom 3 has two single beds and a single mattress on the floor under the eaves. Bedroom 4 has a double bed and a mattress on the floor under the eaves. The mattresses can be moved between the rooms for flexibility, however this makes floorspace tight. On the first floor there is a large feature bathroom. On the ground floor there is a cloakroom (with a toilet and a basin) and a separate shower, both of which are accessed from the utility room. This shower does not lock. The kitchen is a little dated but is well equipped for cooking for 10 people. To seat 9 or 10 at the table, turn it sideways and swap the carver chars for chairs from upstairs so you can fit two people on an end. Parking on the adjoining Bitterbeck pay and display car park costs approx £7/24 hours. Alternatively there is a free car park where up to 3 hours parking (with a disk-which is provided) is allowed opposite the house and unrestricted free parking is available approx 10 mins walk from the house. Overnight free parking on Kirkgate is often possible. More detail is provided in the 'Guest Access' section of this listing. The unique living room features a stunning traditional stove in the 18th century stone range surround. This stove is powered by gas for ease of use. Please note that no fireguard is provided and the stove must not be used when anyone who might touch it who could fail to understand the danger of a stove which still looks the same when it is extremely hot. Electric heaters are provided as an alternative. An armchair and a double sofa both recline for comfort. This house is NOT recommended for families with young children who need stair gates because it does not have stair gates and would not provide a relaxing experience for parents of children who need them. Guests are politely requested not to wear outdoor shoes once they leave the ground floor - so you may find it useful to bring some slippers or shoes for indoor use only. If you wish to bring a pet please enquire before booking. Electric car charging has been managed at 12 Kirkgate. This is currently from a 3-pin 13amp plug (granny charging) through a long extension cable which runs through the utility room window (which locks 1 inch open) to the car park. The extension cable and a bright anti-trip cover for it are provided. Charging is free. It can take some effort to get a parking space on the correct side of the P&D car park which adjoins the house and, of course, we can't guarantee this. But it has been done, and if other guests use this facility successfully we will invest in a proper charge point. The easiest way to access 12 Kirkgate is to head for the far corner of the Bitterbeck P&D car park post code CA13 9NW. Even if the car park is busy you should be able to unload and collect your parking disk(s). When the car park is busy you can usually park in the All Saints car park opposite 12 Kirkgate (CA13 9PJ - up to 3 hours free parking with a disk) or on street (1 hour or overnight free with your disk) until spaces appear in the car park appear. The one pinch point during the week is usually Friday night when everyone comes into Cockermouth and it can be tricky to park, so it's best either to avoid trying to park between about 6:30 and 9pm or to allow time to park on the Castlegate Drive or Windmill Lane estates in the unrestricted areas and walk about 10 mins back to the house. Guest staying a week or more often choose to buy a local parking permit for a month before they arrive. This costs about £36 and gives unlimited access to both the Bitterbeck and All Saints car parks and also to the large/long say Keswick car parks. Search Allerdale MI Permit Digital Permit. The property owner has lived in this house for over 22 years and would be delighted to chat to you (on the phone or by zoom) to help you ensure you make the best of your precious holiday time. Home to William Wordsworth during his childhood, Cockermouth is a stunning, historic market town on the edge of the Lake District. It features destination restaurants, bars and fabulous shops including antique shops, art galleries and craft and art shops. The three short walks to stunning riverside viewpoints should not be missed. Cockermouth historic town trail starts directly opposite this house. Just take some photos of the sign and off you go. Cockermouth is also a Mecca for cyclists being on the C2C, the Lakes and Dales loop, fabulous cycle routes to the north and close to the famous Honister and Whinlatter passes. There is an excellent cycle shop with highly-skilled owners who can help and advise you on everything cycle-related about 100m from the house.
