Delightful house close to beach with superb views
PLEASE NOTE : We have had road closures following storms and flooding so the property has been accessible only by boat up to 21 December 2021 when the road was opened again to the public as far as Te Mahia. So my place is now accessible by road but requires careful driving, on Te Mahia Road in particular. I will update any changes here. You reach the property by road from Linkwater which is on the Picton to Havelock Road ( Queen Charlotte Drive). It is approximately 22 kilometres from the Kenepuru Road turnoff at Linkwater. The area is known for boating, fishing, kayaking and is very safe for swimming. There are seldom many people on the beach which is accessed via the private road and is usually used by only about 5 families. There are many walks in the environs including the Queen Charlotte walkway which can be accessed from the saddle above Te Mahia Bay ,( ten minutes walk). The saddle also allows access to Waterfall Bay and Mistletoe Bay on Queen Charlotte Sound. There are various options available in the area for launching boats and waterskiing. There is a motel at Te Mahia which operates a small shop and a cafe. You can admire a slightly different view of the bay and the sound while sipping your coffee. The Portage hotel and restaurant is about 12 kilometres further on down Kenepuru Road and if you do not have a boat there are water taxis available to take you from the Te Mahia jetty to Raetihi Lodge on the other side of the sound for a delicious lunch or dinner. The house is equipped with a stereo system, late model TV set and Sky is available although you would have to supply your own decoder. There is a DVD player and a good selection of DVDs. There is also a selection of reading material although it would be appreciated if no books were removed from the property. In the kitchen there is a soda stream, a microwave, and a bread maker along with the usual kitchen necessities. Arrangements can be made for cleaners at an extra charge although the property is so easy to sweep out and leave clean and tidy that cleaners have not been necessary in the past. There is a vacuum cleaner and the floors can be easily swept and wiped over with a mop. It is a very easy care holiday property! ! Special conditions: Families or couples are preferred as the bedroom arrangements are not suitable for groups of young adults. Smoking is not allowed as there can be a risk of fire during periods of drought. Water also must be used sparingly as the supply is stream water from a spring further up the hill and this can dry up in dry spells. All power and water must be turned off as you leave according to a sheet which will be sent once a booking is made. Bookings should be for 3 nights minimum . In summer, 5 nights. Please note that there is quite a steep drive up to the house and a path and steps from the top of the drive, which older people may find a challenge. Extras: Cleaning (Compulsory charge, NZ$100.00 per stay); NOTE: Cleaning between guests is thorough and disinfectant is used on all surfaces, door knobs etc. Under Kiwi bach tradition you are expected to: Bring your own linen (towels/sheets/tea towels);
