The local pub is within an 8 min walk and serves excellent food throughout the year. On the way to Ottery St Mary you will pass Joshua's Table, stocking the best of local produce, and the original Otter Nurseries that founded the national gardening retailer chain. Ottery St Mary itself has a Sainsbury’s along with shops providing local produce and is proud to be a plastic free town. It holds the world famous ‘Tar barrels’ on November 5th and Pixie Day on Midsummer's day, indeed, these and other traditions are thought to have been the inspiration of Ottery St Catchpole, the home of the Weasleys in the Harry Potter Universe when JK Rowling studied at Exeter University - If you look carefully, the Burrow is on your right as you head through West Hill towards the Westpoint conference and exhibition centre. In the other direction is the historic lace town of Honiton, where the first English lace was developed in the 16th century and had a massive resurgence when Queen Victoria had a wedding dress commissioned entirely out of Honiton Lace. Local facilities including Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, a range of antique and local produce stores. The renowned Pig at Combe restaurant is 10 mins away in Gittisham, or just 5 minutes further on is the beautiful Deer Park where you can dine in the Italian Restaurant, or outdoor mediterranean kitchen set in an amazing 80 acres of landscaped garden. There is a bus stop 2 minutes away for local trips into Ottery, Exeter or Honiton (bus timetable will be in your welcome pack). Honiton has a train station (a 10 minute drive/taxi journey) connecting directly to London Waterloo via Salisbury (a beautiful journey in its own right) and on to Exeter St Davids where connections can be made to Cornwall or North Devon. There are too many walking routes to mention - we can talk you through the most suitable, whether you be seasoned ramblers or just wanting a family Sunday afternoon wander, with the OS map in the cottage.
