Halcyon is an ideal holiday cottage for couples, families and small groups of friends looking for a relaxing getaway in Peterborough. Fall asleep with the sound of the ocean waves close by. Peterborough is also close to all the major attractions including Bay of Islands, Bay of Martyrs, London Bridge, Loch Ard Gorge, 12 Apostles, Gibson Steps and the Gourmet Food Trail. NOT suitable for parties or loud get togethers! Any loud noise after 10pm and you will be asked to leave. The name “Halcyon” means Calm and Peaceful. It was thought that a fabled bird likened to the Kingfisher or Halcyon genus was said to breed around the time of the Winter solstice on a nest floating on the sea. It was believed that the bird had the power to Calm the Wind and the Waves. Many friends and family that have spent time at Halcyon remark on the peace and calmness about it. A place where many memories were to be made. We hope that you too find relaxation and peace when you stay here and make lots of good memories. Wake up to see lazy cattle meandering by in the paddock behind the backyard. You may also see a Kangaroo or two amongst them! The cottage has two levels. There are stairs so young children need to be supervised around them. There are two bedrooms down stairs and two upstairs. There is also a large common space upstairs with a pool table, TV with DVD player, comfy couches and a king single bed which is an ideal place for kids and young adults to hang out whilst the adults relax downstairs . There is also a wood fire which will keep you cosy and warm in Winter. Free WiFi is available and Fetch TV which allows you access to apps such as Netflix and U tube, free to air TV, Stan, movies on demand and kids channels. Portacot available on request. Tea, Coffee and basic condiments provided. We do not live in Peterborough but have family 10 minutes away if there is anything that urgently needs attention. We are always contactable by phone. Halycyon is located on a residential street. Please be respectful of our neighbours and keep noise to a minimum after 9.00 pm. As the services in Peterborough are quite limited, I would recommend stocking up on food before you get here if you are planning to do some cooking at Halcyon. Timboon has a supermarket (IGA) (about 20 mins away), Port Campbell general store (about 13 minutes away), although it can be quite expensive. If you are travelling through any major towns including Camperdown, Warrnambool, or Colac then it may be worth stopping there to stock up. Peterborough General Store has a good array of take away food options and Barista Coffee. You will also find the local post office and fuel here too. Directly across the road is the Peterborough licensed Grocery and next door to that is The Peterborough Arts and Antiques cafe. There is also the Schomberg Inn located on the Great Ocean Road. It has an indoor children's play ground and is open from 5.30 pm for dinner. If you are after a wider range of choices including fine dining, Port Campbell would be your closest place. Remember, some restaurants and cafes operate on a seasonal basis so it may be worth ringing ahead to check if they are open. It is definitely worth the trip into picturesque Timboon to eat at The Fat Cow or the Distillery. Finish off with a scrumptious ice cream from Timboon Fine Ice Cream. Halcyon is situated on a quiet street within walking distance of the beaches and coastal walking tracks. Peterborough is a small, tranquil, low-key fishing and beach holiday destination. The town is situated on the western side of the Curdies River estuary which forms a broad inlet behind the town. Peterborough is located on the Great Ocean Road 247 km south-west of Melbourne between Port Campbell (13 km to the east) and Warrnambool (53 km to the west). On the eastern side of the river mouth is Port Campbell National Park and on the western side of Peterborough is the Bay of Islands Coastal Park. The coastline is characterised by sheer limestone cliffs, offshore islands, gorges, arches, blowholes and other striking rock formations. There is a seaside golf course, a picnic area beside Curdies River and plenty of fishing, boating and swimming opportunities in the river and sea. There is a boat ramp jetty. The Victorian Coastline is renown for its rough and unpredictable waters. The closest patrolled beach is at Port Campbell. Visitors to the area need to be aware of their own abilities when it comes to swimming and precede with caution and to always supervise children swimming. There is ample opportunity at Peterborough to enjoy long beach walks undisturbed, paddles in the shallows and to explore the numerous rock pools. Public transport is very limited in Peterborough. There is a bus service which goes through to Warrnambool on a Thursday. From Warrnambool there are connections to regional towns and Melbourne. As Peterborough has limited TV reception, there is currently no free-to-air channels. However, we do provide a smart TV with Foxtel channels and Wi-Fi. Also, please note that there is only one toilet.
