High House Cottage - A traditonal style cottage
Our guests often describe our cottage as feeling like home from home. High house cottage is over 400 years old but we feel we have a good balance of modern amenities to make the cottage comfortable during your stay. It is in the village of St Bees in the Western part of the Lake District. Close to the sea, lakes and mountains it is a perfect place to take a holiday. The cottage has wooden beams which were originally parts of ships, probably wrecked in the bay. The cottage has four bedrooms sleeping up to seven people. Bedroom 1 has king size bed, Bedroom 2 has twin single beds which, by request, can be zipped together to make a super king bed. Bedroom 3 has twin single beds and bedroom 4 has one single bed. These are all on the first floor where there is also a bathroom with roll top bath, shower enclosure, basin and toilet. On the ground floor there is a well equipped kitchen: gas hob with double oven, a fridge freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer and wood burning stove (Fuel supplied). There is a small farmhouse table and seating for two in the kitchen. The separate dining room seats 8 around a large pine farmhouse table, perfect for spending time eating with friends and family. In the lounge there is comfortable seating for everyone, a TV with DVD player and a quiet corner with books, lamp and a cosy chair where you can snuggle up and read. The room also has a flame effect electric fire and windows front and back. In the oak dresser there are a wide range of toys and games - families with young children will also find a box of Happyland figures, vehicles, castle etc under the stairs to keep little ones entertained. Many of our guests comment about the welcoming and cosy atmosphere of the cottage - it certainly feels like a home from home. With gas central heating throughout and the woodburner the cottage is as comfortable in winter as it is in summer. Aside from traffic coming down the lane into the village at rush hour it is a very quiet spot with barn owls nearby and fields opposite. We find it very peaceful. Guests are allowed to use all of the cottage and front patio area with the exception of two owners' cupboards. NB. The garden at the rear of the cottage is not part of our property. Guests are always welcome to contact us by messaging or calling Stephen. We also welcome email. We would rather you get in touch with any problems so that we can try and solve them and you can enjoy your stay. The cottage is on the outskirts of the pretty village of St. Bees with its ancient abbey. The large sandy beach (with great playground and café) is about 20 minutes walk away and has ample parking. Beyond the beach lies spectacular St Bees Head, an RSPB reserve with rewarding clifftop walks. In the village, ten minutes walk away, there is a post office and shop. There are also four pubs in the village, two of which serve good food. The train station in the village is only 12 minutes walk from the cottage. Nearby Whitehaven, ten minutes by car (and also served by train) has a range of supermarkets and other shops, places to eat, harbour. and museums. The beautiful scenery (mountains and lakes) of Ennerdale and Wastwater are approx. 30-40 minutes drive and are well worth a visit. Guests can reach the cottage by train (station is in the village just a short walk away) or by car. Space is available on the road outside the cottage to park easily. The stairs leading up from the living room are open sided, this means that a stair gate cannot be fixed at the bottom, there is however a stair gate which can be fixed between the master bedroom and top of the stairs, please see pictures to get an idea of this.
