Eagle Hill is an all season rural retreat with spectacular 360-degree views over Mudgee's Riverlea Valley. Sleeping 8-10 in comfort, with 25 acres to explore, and minutes to the best regional wineries. Outside you'll find a generous panoramic entertaining deck, complete with BBQ and outdoor dining facilities, seasonal orchard and fire pit. Explore the property for nature trails and hikes, picnic-perfect dam and an abundance of rainbow birds and Aussie wildlife. The house itself is cosy and well appointed - sleeping 8 guests comfortably with an option to request an additional sofa bed made up. MAIN HOUSE Kitchen: Kitchen should have everything you need – pots, pans, baking dishes & utensils, bread maker, platters, slow cooker, jaffle maker, popcorn machine, convection cooktop, mugs, glasses, kids plates/cups/bowls etc. Water is filtered through the tap. Dining: 6 seater oak dining table extends and you’ll find additional cross-back chairs in the bedrooms. The hutch behind the table houses a wine rack and a range of puzzles and games for all ages. Living Room: Set around a combustion fireplace, supported by reverse cycle heating/cooling wall unit, the lounge overlooks the hills over the deck, and a wall mounted TV. Main Bedroom: Queen bed, built in wardrobe, hot/cold air conditioner, overlooking the hills. Second Bedroom: Queen bed, built-in wardrobe, standing heater, overlooking the hills. Bunk Room: King single bunks, chest of drawers, wall hooks, standing heater, overlooking the roses. Bathroom: Shower, hair dryer and night light. Laundry: Washing Machine, drying racks, iron & board, vacuum, picnic basket and blankets, outdoor games, fire extinguisher. Clothes line out the back & drying rack in laundry. STUDIO: 4 metres from the house, along the level deck, is the self-contained studio. Queen bed, bathroom with shower, mini-fridge, kettle, toaster, lounge, shoe basket and hooks. DECK: 10 seater dining table overlooking the valley, gas BBQ and Outdoor heater. THE PROPERTY: A picturesque 3.5 hr drive through the Blue Mountains from Sydney you’ll quickly see why Mudgee means “Nest in the Hills”. As the landscape undulates over beautiful Windamere Dam, you’ll soon turn off the highway on the Sydney side of town, to a pretty red earth road. 2kms over the river bridge – also a great swimming hole for the warmer months – and you’ll discover the hidden valley. With 360’ mountains, the Cudgegong River snaking through (that dark line of trees you see from the deck), and peppered with pretty olive farms and grazing paddocks, it’s easy to see why the Riverlea Valley is an Airbnb favourite in Mudgee. “Eagle Hill” is set in the middle on the highest hill, with panoramic vistas. The Riverlea Valley has it’s own micro climate so you should get some spectacular low fogs, creeping golden sunrises and spectacular sunsets from Mudgee’s famous “golden hour” - around 4pm – as the sun sets over the outback. On a clear night the Milky Way streaks brightly across the Valley. When you get to the property, drive up to the carport beside the house or park under the Loquat trees beside it. The Home paddock is fun to explore. There are 30ish fruit trees around the house – apples, figs, peaches, apricots, loquats, plums, nectarines, citrus, pears, olives etc – these attract incredible rainbow bird life. You’ll see some famous Mudgee roses grafted from the old train station and behind the house you’ll find the foundations of the original gold miners cottage. There’s an aviary, a chook coop, a bore, and some sheds to see hints of the recent working farm. The 25 acre property has lots to explore and a perimeter walk is a great place to start. The front paddock has a fire pit and a great view you don’t get from the deck, looking right down the valley. In the far corner along the road you’ll see our picnic-perfect dam fed by a natural spring that runs down Eagle Hill. The fence line bath marks out our boundary. Over the ridge beside the house you’ll discover “Kangaroo Corner” – delightful for the kids. No stay is complete without at least one walk up Eagle Hill to take in the spectacular views. For an easy (kid friendly) walk, head to the back paddock gate and follow inside the fence-line up the hill on the right to the fallen-tree bench. For the more adventurous, head through the gate and up Eagle Hill for views from the highway to the right and Windemere Dam wall to the left. There's a herd of 60ish wild goats that circle the mountain every day so you’ll see their tracks and hopefully see them each day. Lots of babies at the moment. Rounding out the fauna are the family of Eagles that nest on the hill that go for a glide most days. And of course there's no shortage of Kangaroos. We’ve also seen an echidna so look out for overturned rocks as a clue it’s around! LOCAL AREA You’ll be right round the corner from some of the region’s best wineries – renowned Logan cellar door overlooks Eagle Hill – order a cheese platter as see if you can work out which one it is. Town is a picturesque 15 minute drive through the vines. Daytrips to Gulgong, Rylestone and the wider region are well worth the drive. SUGGESTIONS FOR YOUR STAY Try and make sure you drive in during daylight hours. The stretch between Lithgow and Mudgee is spectacular and iconically Australian and you’ll minimise the risk of roos. Pack walking shoes/boots/gumboots and long pants to make the most of walking the property. Pack warm clothes for cold nights and hats for sunny days. Try and organise a wine tour. Logan, First Ridge, Burrundulla and Moothi Estate are all on the way to town and a great start to the day. A few of our other faves to visit, north east of town are: di Lusso (stop here for Lunch, they have a pizza oven, Italian varietals, and bocce by the lake), Pieter van Gent (try and get the pink port poured over ice with a squeeze of lime), Huntington Estate, Peterson’s, Bunnamagoo, Yeates, Robert Oatley. Two of the best ones - Lowe & Robert Stein - have beautiful restaurants as well. The Warrakirri Dining Experience is an unforgettable Aboriginal fine dining degustation with Sharon Winsor. Her café IndigiEarth is well worth a visit for breakky and lunch too. Book yourself in for lunch or dinner at The Zin House after a tasting at Lowe vineyard. Chef Kim Curry is renowned in the Central West, as is biodynamic winemaker David Lowe. An afternoon at Low taking in their nature walk, past the donkeys and “beach” is a beautiful prelude to dinner at The Zin House. Try a degustation lunch with matching wines at Pipeclay Pumphouse at Robert Stein winery and make sure you get there a bit early and visit the cellar door and their vintage motorbike museum. They also do a brilliant breaky… truffle eggs anyone?! Three Tails Brewery and Smokehouse is new and a fantastic vibe. For breakky there are endless bustling cafes to choose from in Mudgee town. If you feel like a scenic drive head out to Gulgong – it’s a town frozen in time and used to be on the old $10 note. For a drink in town Roth’s is a local fave, there’s also Elton’s, and all the pubs are awesome and each a little different. The Lawson is more of a family pub, the balcony at Kelly’s Irish pub is a bit young n fun and a beautiful spot to watch the sun go down, and the Oriental is a good all-rounder – a bit glam after the recent reno. The Courthouse etc are also awesome country pubs. Lot’s of live music at most of them. For families The Orient has a kids room and Kelly’s has a playground out the back. Loads of great shopping – Church and Market streets are worth a stroll but don’t miss the hidden gems like Loft on Lewis Street with delightful garden café out the back. Every weekend there are markets and winery events on too so check out the VisitMudgeeRegion website for inspiration. If you still want more nature after exploring Eagle Hill go for a bushwalk to The Drip on Ulan Road. If you’re driving back to Sydney you can stop at Rylestone on your way home and have the famous dumplings at 29Nine99 FOR KIDS Loads of parks, playgrounds and cycling tracks to enjoy. Our kids go wild for Mudgee Pool’s water park – with the best Korean Fried Chicken you’ll find in the Central West. And Dubbo Zoo is an hour and a half away and a very pretty daytrip. Full access of the entire property. To inspire your stay with us we recommended browsing the accounts we follow on EagleHillMudgee Instagram.
