Bonfire and Barbecue Night had fallen when we returned from our village walk. The location of the resort is a clear winner in the sense that it overlooks a dry riverbed on one side which is devoid of any civilisation. The open area had ample space for organising a bonfire; which was turned into a memorable experience with the addition of old hindi songs and barbecue. The chirping of insects in the mild breeze added to the effect and after an hour or two had passed, dinner and opted for just a dessert and tea. The chef’s special phirni had a delectable taste; just the perfect way to end the bonfire and I ambled to the warmth of my room. The coexistence of the resident animals, birds and reptiles with the vast ecosphere combining the ravines and ridges of the lesser Himalayas with the subtropical and deciduous forests and minor streams makes it worth spending a good chunk of the day traversing the area. The only permissible way to do so is to avail the safari services offered at the park. There are five safari zones in the Corbett National park: the Bijrani zone, the Jhirna zone, the Durgadevi zone, the Dhela zone, and the Dhikala zone. Additionally, the Corbett Tiger Reserve also holds the Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as the Sitabani Zone, though this fall outside the Corbett National Park. There are three types of Safaris one can opt for to explore these zones: the Canter Safari, the Jeep Safari, and the Elephant Safari. The safaris need to be an essential part of the visit to this park if one wishes to see the exquisite species of animals like the Royal Bengal Tiger, jackal, wild boar, Himalayan bear, elephant, barking deer, sambar deer, hog deer, Sloth, Himalayan goral and many other species of animals, birds and reptiles roaming about naturally in this protected area. The safaris are organised once in the morning and the evening, and each zone has a restriction on the number of vehicles allowed within at a given point in time. Due to the varied topography of the region, the safaris are limited to the sunshine period of the day. This makes it easier for tourists to notice the scampering wildlife as well. 1. Corbett Waterfall, This 66 ft. high waterfall is a sight to witness, especially on full-moon nights. Nature lovers often camp and come on a picnic near this falls. 2. Dhikala, Jim Corbett National Park Corbett National Park is one of the oldest and most well-known wildlife sanctuaries in India. As the Jhirna zone is open for the day tourists throughout the year, so it is one of the most visited zones in the Corbett Reserve forest. Other animals like wild elephants, sambar and various species of deer along with a large number of bird species are found in this zone. This zone is also remains open all round the year for the tourists as like the Jhirna zone. However, the safari tour depends on the weather condition. The zone consists of mix topography which includes the dense forest of trees like Sal, Haldu, Bahera, Rohini and Kusum along with the large grasslands and various water bodies. This zone is rich in the fauna species too with the animals like the Royal Bengal tiger, leopards, wild elephants, Nilgai, different species of Deer, wild bears and the various species of reptiles and birds. This zone is well known especially for the vast range of bird species and considered as the best zone for birding. One can book the day safari to visit this zone and be the part of this magnificent part of the Corbett forest. Apart from the safari entry permit, you also have to book a Jeep and a guide, without which you can't get the entry inside the forest. 5. Durga Devi Zone, With the hilly landscape, the Durga Devi zone is like paradise for nature lovers with the enchanting natural surroundings. The zone is situated on the northeast periphery of the Corbett forest and highly rich in species of flora and fauna. The streams of Ramganga River and Mandal River enrich the water bodies of this zone and add the beauty to this wild forest. The main attractions of this zone, apart from the majestic Tigers, are leopards, wild elephants and Otters, which are primarily found near the Domunda Bridge. The famous fish known as the Mahsheer fish is found in the river streams of this zone. This zone is also rich in bird species, providing excellent birding opportunities. The bird species found in this zone include Gray Headed Fishing Eagle, Maroon Orile, Black chinned Yuhina, Long Tailed Broadbill, slaty blue flycatcher, bar tailed tree creeper and plenty of others. The zone is literally a paradise for the bird watcher. Jeep safari is organized for this zone and tourists can also stay at night at the Lohachaur Forest Guest House in this zone after making a prior booking. 5.Sitabani Forest Zone, The Sitabani forest zone is the reserve forest zone located outside the Corbett Tiger reserve area. The zone is treated as the Buffer area of the tiger reserve and is open to everyone to visit here. The landscape of this zone has a rich natural view which consists of dense forest and river streams along with many old temples. You will find plenty of herbivore animals like elephants, deer, sambars, Nilgai and others roaming freely here. Though it is a buffer zone and tigers or leopards sighting are almost negligible here, but sometimes these dangerous predators are spotted here in search of their prey. There are around 600 bird species found in this zone among which most are migratory birds. The zone is a delight for the bird watchers. Sprawled in the large area which even incorporates many villages in it, one must visit this zone to savor the magical ambiance of the enchanting nature. This zone is a less visited delight of nature as tourists generally prefer to visit the tiger reserve area and give this zone a miss. There is an old temple named Sitabani Temple is located in the forest and is protected and maintained by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI). Along with this, there is also a very old temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. These temples are visited by a large number of devotees. It would be really a memorable experience to explore this forest and a night safari in the Sitabani forest will be a thrilling experience and you will get an adrenaline rush with the quiet and eerie ambiance of the forest and in the anticipation of encountering any wild animal. Visitors are allowed to explore this zone by the Jeep safari, elephant safari or by walking. The private vehicles are also allowed in this zone. You have to pay the entry fee on the spot at the entry gate in Teda Village to enter in the forest reserve area and after exploring the forest you have to make the exit from the Paulgarh gate, almost 60 km away from the entry gate. RIVERS AROUND CORBETT NATIONAL PARK : Water is essential for the survival of the spectacular avifaunal diversity present in the Corbett National Park. Such a remarkable gamut of flora and fauna species in the park is seen just because of the mighty rivers flowing through the park that plays a crucial role in shaping the biodiversity. The Ramganga river (West) along with its significant tributaries Sonanadi, Palain and Mandal forms the prominent hydrological resource for the Corbett. The river Kosi also flows by national park and serves as the significant water resources for the nearby area. The major portion of the Corbett wild is situated on the bank of River Kosi. These water bodies shape the wide and varied aquatic life of the region. The precious wildlife of the Corbett is dependent on rivers as they provide drinking water for them especially in dry season. The river that flows in and around the Jim Corbett National Park are as follows: Ramganga River : Ramganga River is the Lifeline for Corbett National Park. We cannot imagine the existence of Corbett without Ramganga. It is the largest of all the precious water bodies in the park. We can imagine the importance of this river with evidence that it was named Ramganga National Park for a brief period from (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) before it was named Corbett National Park. The river is fed by rain and originates from the Gairsain region in Lesser Himalayas. The river flows around a stretch of near about 100 kilometers before you get inside the park near Marchula. Approximately, it flows 40 Kms east to west inside the park till Kalagarh where it meets plains. Image It collects water from the Palain, Mandal and Sonanadi rivers during this run through the park and finally drains into River Ganga near Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh. Kosi : The Kosi is a perennial river that servers major portion of the Corbett's wild as the Corbett wild use the Kosi river to quench their thirst. Eastern periphery of the park is fed by Kosi that flows from Mohan till Ramnagar via Dhikuli. Though, the Kosi does not enter the park boundary. Sonanadi : This gorgeous river is the significant tributary of Ramganga River. The river has been named after the Sonanadi wildlife Sanctuary that adjoins Corbett National Park and held as an crucial part of Corbett Tiger Reserve. It enters the Corbett from the North-West direction and merges into the Ramganga River at its reservoir. Delhi - Gajrola - Moradabad - Kashipur - Ramnagar (around 245 km) : Whether you are traveling by your private vehicle or by the hired vehicle, this is the easiest and shortest road route to reach Corbett from Delhi. Start your journey from Delhi and by crossing the Ghaziabad or Noida road, hit the NH24 to drive towards Hapur. Crossing the Hapur, Gajrola and Garhmukeshwar you will reach Moradabad. Here, at Moradabad, do not enter into the city instead take the right turn to Muradabad bypass road and crossing the Thakurdwara and then Kashipur you will finally reach the Ramnagar.rom Ramnagar, you can either directly reach the entry gate of the Corbett Park or visit at your pre-booked hotel or resort to stay. The whole distance will be around 245 km which will take nearly 6 hours to cover. The roads are in decent conditions except for the little stretch of state road near Ramnagar. Here are the few other road routes which you can prefer to take if you are visiting the Corbett Park from places other than Delhi- If you are starting your journey from Bareilly or nearby places, then choose the following route- Bareilly - Kichha - Haldwani - Ramnagar (around 160 km) If you are visiting Corbett from Nainital then hit the route below- Nainital - Ramnagar (Via Kaladhungi) (62 Km). For Lucknow to Corbett road trip, go for the given route- Lucknow - Bareilly - Kicha - Rudrapur - Kashipur - Ramnagar (435 km) By Rail: Delhi To Ramnagar The nearest railway station from Corbett is Ramnagar which is around 12 km from the park and the station is directly connected to the railway stations in Delhi. A direct train named Ranikhet Express runs from Delhi to Ramnagar which is the best train to reach Corbett from Delhi. You can catch the Ranikhet express at 10:50 pm at Delhi to reach Ramnagar at 04:35 am next day, and again return by catching the same train at Ramnagar at 09:05 pm to reach Delhi at 05:00 am next day. The train operates on a daily basis. However, Ramnagar station is the best option to reach Corbett but alternatively, you can also arrive at the Kathgodam station and visit Ramnagar by taxi or cab which will take around 3 and half hours by road.
