La Boutique Montmartre
This 12th Century house is in a peaceful street near the ancient medieval donjon (tower) which overlooks Montcuq. The centre of town is a two minute walk away, with cafés, bars and a busy market every Sunday. It would suit couples, small families or individuals who might be looking for a quiet place to retreat. The house bears the sign 'Montmartre Boutique' because it was historically a shop when the centre of Montcuq was here. Wi-Fi speed: upload 223.31 Mbps / download 66.29 Mbps The living room is truly the heart of this house, with its large Renaissance fireplace, polished wooden floors and high ceiling. It is both cosy in winter (with the fire roaring and a glass of wine!) and blissfully cool in the summer. There is a vast music collection, many books, and plenty of art on the walls. The medieval mood is quite marked in this room, as the thick stone walls show the outlines of ancient doors and windows, giving a glimpse of the rich history of this part of France. The kitchen is fairly traditional, with French windows that open out onto the street - ideal in the summer months. It is very well-equipped, and guests are welcome to use absolutely anything in there. There is a small utility room adjacent to the kitchen, which has a WC, hand basin and a tumble dryer. The top floor has a comfortable double bed and a fantastic view of the valley opposite. This room is also a perfect workspace, as it has a large vintage architects table in front of the window. If necessary (for small children), there is also a 'day bed' on the top floor which can be turned into a single bed, and separated from the double bed with a curtain. Just off the bedroom there is a small bathroom, complete with a bath/ shower, toilet and hand basin. Towels are provided. The overall atmosphere of the house is informal, perfect for anyone who appreciates peace and tranquility - with the option of bars, cafes and restaurants only a short walk away. From this elevated part of town the views of the surrounding countryside are stunning. As I live in London I am not able to attend in person to immediate practical problems should they arise, although I am available 24/7 on my mobile. Montcuq is immensely historic but is not overwhelmingly museum-like as with Lauzerte. It is a living, breathing town! There is nothing in the way of public transport to Montcuq so a car is pretty much necessary. Parking is available very close to the house at Rue de la Tour. There is an excellent tourist office in town and, very close-by, a mediatheque. The local shops are first-class, particularly the butchers and newsagents, and the Carrefour supermarket just outside town (1.5km away) is indispensable.
