Little House in the Big Woods
The Little House is a small antique (pre-1800) fully furnished and equipped private guesthouse on 145 acres of secluded fields & woodlands adjacent to hundreds of acres more of preserved land and state parks in the Quiet Corner of Connecticut, 3 hour's drive from Ny, 1.5 hrs from Boston & 45 min from Providence/Hartford. It comfortably sleeps four people, and is also equipped for small children (“Pack and Play”with sheets, antique high chair provided and extra age-appropriate toys available) The location is very quiet, a nature sanctuary, and the property is organically managed with no pesticides or herbicides used. Mattresses are organic cotton and organic latex. Sheets are 100% cotton, washed and ironed professionally. However, the roped beds are antique, slightly smaller than full double size, as they are for 18-19th century people. For history buffs, the Little House is the birthplace of Waterbury’s Augustus Sabin Chase, see Waterbury Connecticut Hall of Fame. The house has been in the same family, eight generations, since 1814 There are two ponds to fish in, a tennis court you can use (bring your own rackets and balls), and lots of walking paths through the woods, linking directly to the Airline Trail, the Wyndham Land Trust and the New England Forestry Foundation’s memorial Chase Kimball Forest, adjacent to the Wolf Den and Mashomoquet State Parks. There is a huge deck, and excellent birdwatching. In winter, you can snowshoe or cross-country ski. The Airline Trail is ideal for hiking, bicycling and skiing, as is the Wolf Den State Park. We are also close to the Audubon Grasslands Center and the Goodwin Conservation Center. I live in the Big House in front, so am usually there for check in, and if they need anything, but otherwise leave guests alone. The houses are completely separate. It is paradise- far away from civilization, yet close enough to take day trips to Boston, Hartford, Worcester, Providence, Old Sturbridge Village, Mystic Seaport - all of Southern New England. Only a very short drive to Pomfret, Rectory, Marianapolis and Putnam Science Academy private schools, 20 minutes from University of Connecticut at Storrs and 15 minutes from EastConn you need a car The beds and furniture are not really satisfactory for very large or seriously overweight people. Ceilings are low and furniture is small.
