Maelgwyn,the house on the cliff

Our place is located on the cliff in Borth, with spectacular views of Cardigan bay. It is a 3 storey Victorian house, of which the top floor will be all yours; maximum 4 guests. The top floor consists of 2 bedrooms, a lounge room and 1 spacious bathroom. This accommodation would be suitable for golfers, surfers, ramblers or family gatherings. A complimentary breakfast hamper will be available in the lounge area for you to enjoy with sea views and sightings of dolphins House History: Maelgwyn A large number of Borth Mariners retired in the first quarter of the 20th Century which heralded a flurry of house building. The first houses on the cliff were built by sea captains, beginning with Captain William Richards' houses the two Maelgwyns in 1904. Captain Richards retired inland to another of his houses, again named Maelgwyn, where he took up gardening in a serious way. He planted an orchard and had a heated glasshouse producing some of the first tomatoes grown in the area (Text from Borth: A Seaborn Village by Terry Davies.) Borth is part of the Dyfi Biosphere, the only UNESCO Biosphere reserve in Wales, plus the Dyfi National Nature Reserve and visitors centre at Ynyslas. The Welsh Coastal path passes through Borth village. Located just 7 miles north of Aberystwyth, the town boasts a Blue flag beach with over two miles of golden sand as it stretches northwards to Ynyslas. The beach is of a particularly shallow gradient, making it ideal for young families. Borth is an ideal base from which to explore the coastline, with Barmouth, Aberdovey and Harlech to the North, and Aberystwyth to the South, all a short journey away. Cantre'r Gwaelod At certain times of the year, along the southern end of the beach, low tide reveals the stumps of an ancient forest that flourished over 1500 years ago. The submerged woodland evokes the myth of Cantre'r Gwaelod, and ancient Welsh kingdom, said to be swallowed by the sea. Six thousand years later, and Borth has the modern-day accolade of being one of the key filming locations for the S4C/BBC Wales Nordic Noir television series Hinterland. Cors Fachno, the boat yard where the River Leri reaches the sea, and Borth station, have featured prominently in the internationally acclaimed award-winning series.
