The nearby mountain towns of Boone, Blowing Rock, West Jefferson and Banner Elk have a plethora of unique downtown boutique shops, antique stores and restaurants to enjoy. Moravian Falls is a very special place and carries historical significance dating back to 1752 when Moravian Bishop August Gottlieb led an expedition to locate the area where the Unitas Fratrum, or Moravian church, intended to begin the Wachovia settlements. Members of the Moravian Church in Europe purchased 98,985 acres (400.58 km2) of land in the backcountry of North Carolina from John Carteret and Earl Granville. They named the 98,985-acre (400.58 km2) tract of land die Wachau, or "Wachovia," meaning "meadow of the Wach." The name "Wachovia" was chosen as the name of the Moravian North Carolina tract to honor Count Zinzendorf, the Moravian patron and bishop whose family estate was located in the Wachau region northwest of Vienna, along the Danube River between the towns of Melk and Krems. The Moravians most likely felt that the landscape in the back country of North Carolina, with its nearby mountains, local waterways including the Dan River, the Yadkin River, Town Fork Creek and three forks of Muddy Creek, and its fertile land with abundant forest, resembled the Wachau region in central Europe. Nearby Airports: The closest airports to the Refuge Cabin are Charlotte NC Douglas International Airport (96 miles) or Greensboro, NC Airport (83 miles) from Moravian Falls. The Refuge Cabin has one of the most amazing views in all of the Smokey Mountains. However, to enjoy this view, you will need to ascend up Hidden Hollow Lane. Trust me, the view is worth it! Hidden Hollow Lane is a maintained gravel road, that has a shallow crossing of a creek at the bottom of the hill. (Shallow being 1 to 3 inches, unless there have been heavy rains). When crossing the creek, just go very slow to avoid and potential damage to low profile vehicles. No worries though...we drive our Ford Mustang through the creek and up to the mountain road to the cabin all the time. We do suggest if you have access to a high profile vehicle or a four wheel drive using it verses driving a normal car to the cabin. Especially if you are not familiar with driving on gravel mountain roads. When you begin to go up the mountain part of the Hidden Hollow Lane just put your vehicle in a lower gear and keep a steady 20 mph as you go up in order to avoid spinning your tires.
