St. Lucia's Apartment
The St. Lucia’s apartment is located in Potomje, in the Simunkovic family house originally built in the late 19th century. The house was recently fully remodelled with careful attention to detail, coupling modern life conveniences with centuries old architecture. At the entrance to the house’s front garden is the St. Lucia’s chapel, which was built as the Simunkovic family chapel at the end of the 19th century. Above the chapel’s altar is the original painting of St. Lucia, the patron saint of Christians and of the vision impaired. Every year on December 13th the entire village of Potomje celebrates the patron saint’s day with a mass in the chapel. Throughout history, many a couple have said 'I do' at the altar of St. Lucia. As you walk through the garden, you will be greeted by a distinguished hundred and twenty year-old cedar tree, whose shadow protects from the summer heat, and whose tall branches sway in the wind, bringing the calm and sense of life energy to anyone taking a break from daily bustle. Next to the garden hides the Simunkovic Family Winery, in which are made and aged, Plavac Mali wines, the indigenous grape variety. The winery was the original family house; while the exact dates are not known, it is believed that is at least three centuries old. Amenities: 2 double beds, 2 bathrooms, hair dryer, living room, HD TV, dining area, a fully equipped kitchen, heating, a garden view and parking. The winery produces wines exclusively from Plavac Mali variety, the grape that is closely related to Zinfandel and Primitivo. It was only recently discovered that those internationally famous varieties have their roots in Croatia. The winery sources its grapes from its own family vineyards, which are located on the steep southwestern facing slopes of the Zabrada Mountains. This is the region that produces the internationally known and recognized premium quality Dingac wine. Continuing the walk around the property, you will come across the mill in which the family made olive oil over a century ago. Even though the mill is yet to be fully restored, the original equipment is still there. While the family doesn’t make olive oil in the family mill any longer, the tradition is continued as the Simunkovic family uses a local commercial mill to make extra virgin olive oil from olives grown in the family’s own olive groves.
