The Red Winehouse

The Red Winehouse is one individual house: This was one of the last wineries which operated in Finikia village. The winery belonged to a rich family, and it is one exceptional building including a huge canava (domed wine factory) and residential chambers. This impressive construction was built by Santorinian craftsmen using local materials like Aspa (volcanic ash), Poria (red volcanic stones) chipped around the doors and windows, grey and red volcanic stone stairs, traditional doors and traditional concrete floors. Iron railings in all windows were used as protection from the pirates. The building (220 square meters) is arranged on two levels separating and its uses. The first level is the main area (canava), and the second – which is on a higher level by 1.5 m_ are the bedrooms and bathrooms. This old winery was renovated in 1997-8 by a famous Greek architect and stands as a model of combining traditional architecture with industrial design. The canava with impressive proportions and domed roof, is not caved but external, follow the typology of a large church due to constructional and operational reasons. Build benches along the stone walls which were used to support the wine barrels, are now transformed to the steps of an amphitheater. The main area (canava) is a living- dining room with an open kitchen. On the front side of the chamber, over the main entrance) there is a spacious open loft with a double bed. This is used as a third bedroom. On the back side of the canava, separated by robust pillars supporting domes, is hidden one build double bed (fourth bedroom). In the upper level are: The master bedroom (kings' size bed) with en suite bathroom, and one more bedroom with two single beds, both with separate entrances to the upper level of the yard. One more bathroom is beside the second bedroom. House is decorated in a minimal style. All halls of the building are open to a private large yard of about 100 sq.m.. An operational domed oven is on the one side of the yard, attached to the external wall. A small warehouse also attached to the wall has a terrace with view to the Aegean sea. Yards floor is decorated by mosaics from volcanic gravels in local style. The fully equipped kitchen in combination with the yard and the huge living room (16 m length x 7 m width x 6.5 m height) make this place ideal for preparing and enjoying great gourmet dinners indoors (daytime) or out doors in the evening. Ideal for 4- 8 persons This house is situated in the 'FINIKIA traditional settlement' which is a protected neighborhood of Oia. No cars are allowed inside Finikias narrow streets, and the village is peaceful and relaxing. Distance of the house from the bus stop on the main road is 150 meters (walking), from the taverns of Finikia 80 meters, and from the center of Oia 500-800 meters. Nearest sandy beach (Baxedes) is 1500 m downhill, therefore it is advised to go there by bus or rented vehicle. We will be glad helping you to organize your stay in Santorini.
