La Comitissa
La Comitissa, Lucca, Lucca and Viareggio
This light, tranquil villa for eight scores on many fronts. You are within a 20-minute drive of three national parks and have wonderful walks in the immediate vicinity. Yet, for cultural interest, Lucca is just half an hour away, and Pisa and Florence within easy reach for days out. If you feel like visiting the coast, Viareggio is another option. Should you prefer to be more relaxed and stay close to home, La Comitissa, a restored and extended hay barn in the hills just north of Lucca, is wonderfully peaceful. All its rooms, as well as the terrace and private pool, have lovely views across to the Abetone peaks. The accommodation will suit groups of family or friends equally – rooms are generously sized, furnishings are comfortable, and the villa is well equipped. Cooks will love the kitchen, which includes a large central fireplace. If you’re there when nights are cooler, there’s ample space for dining indoors and a lovely fireplace in the lounge. Otherwise, al-fresco meals under the shaded section of terrace are sure to be a favourite. Our Thoughts There are some very nice touches here, such as the Roman-ended pool, multiple sets of double doors to the large terrace and well-equipped kitchen. But we particularly like La Comitissa’s refreshing simplicity: its good-quality furnishings are given plenty of space to breathe, with the result that what one remembers most about the villa is its lovely light and beautiful views. And with all rooms looking out across the hillsides, everyone will be happy here. The property is beautifully kept and your pool will be cleaned on a daily basis. Notes Four bedrooms. Three bathrooms – two en-suite. Please note that the villa’s staircase is not suitable for young children. Fire Place: open Pool The rectangular pool has one Roman end with internal steps to enter the water. A paved surround with sun loungers and a parasol gives on to lawn. Pool size: 10m x 5m, 1.2m-1.7m deep. Open June through September, weather permitting.
