It sinks into the Atlantic Ocean in the west, and protects from the sea the famous Salt Marshes of Guérande (nicknamed "The White Country"). In the North: The Gulf of Morbihan and the estuary of the river "La Vilaine", in the East: The great Marshes of la Brière (nicknamed "The Black Country"). Further south-east: La Baule and the Loire Estuary. In the North West: Quiberon and the islands of "Belle Île", Houât, Hoedic, ...)
