Karpacz (Krummhübel) and the Giant Mountains The Giant Mountains are a low mountain range landscape with an alpine character, which is characterized by rounded, bald peaks, deeply carved valleys, steep slopes and fascinating front views. The massif of the Schneekoppe with its 1602 m high peak is the highest mountain in Central Europe north of the Alps, which you are reminded of up there. Like the Hohe Rad (1509 m), the Große Sturmhaube (1424 m), the Veilchenspitze (1471 m) and the Reifträger (1362 m), the Koppe lies on the mountain ridge, which extends approximately in a west-east direction. This mountain range is the backbone of the Krkonoše Mountains and puts its unmistakable stamp on it. The main ridge marks the border between Poland and the Czech Republic. It forms the watershed between the Elbe and the Oder. The ridge is around 35 km long and runs from Przelecz Szklarska in the west to the Pomezni boudy (border huts) in the east Karpacz lies at the foot of the Schneekoppe, which can be seen well from here and can be climbed with or without lift support. It is the most famous climatic health resort in the Polish part of the mountains. The place was first mentioned in 1599 as a settlement on the 'Krummen Hübel', between the Kleine and Große Lomnitz. At that time, lumberjacks, charcoal burners and herdsmen lived here. It was only in the 17th Century came the trade that made the place known: the production of herbal medicines. The 'laboratory technicians', as the herb collectors called themselves, achieved considerable prosperity. The place at a height of 600 - 800 m is pulled together. The pilgrims to the Laurentius chapel on the Schneekoppe, inaugurated in 1681 - the first Giant Mountains tourists - stopped in Krummhübel. From the small Koppe, which can be reached in 15 minutes with the chair lift, it is only a 30 to 45 minute walk to the Schneekoppe. The most famous sight in the place is the church Wang. The wooden church was built in the early 13th Built in southern Norway for centuries. The Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV had the church, which was to be demolished due to its dilapidation, auctioned off and brought to Berlin, where it was to be built on the Pfaueninsel. Through the mediation of the Countess von Reden from Buchwald (Bukowiec) the church came to Karpacz and was inaugurated in 1844. The hiking opportunities The Giant Mountains are a hiking paradise. The paths, on their partly ancient routes, are excellently marked in both the Polish and the Czech part and can be easily combined. Their nature is different. You should be prepared for stony, steep and uncomfortable sections. In the lower regions you will find beech and mixed forests, further up spruces determine the landscape. You can still admire rare plants on wet biotopes, mountain meadows and in the hollows of former glaciers. In order to protect the flora and fauna of the Giant Mountains, the area around the snow pits, populated by many rare birds, was declared a nature reserve as early as the 1920s. Today there is a national park on both the Polish and the Czech side. A hike on the ridge at 1,300 to 1,500 m is the highlight of a stay in the Giant Mountains because of the magnificent views. Experts recommend the direction from the hoarfrost bearer (Szrenica) in the west to the border shacks in the east, because the scenic beauties increase from west to east and the mountains get higher and higher. The huts, hospitable wooden houses in which you can also spend the night, are characteristic of the Giant Mountains and are very popular with hikers and skiers. The cottages on the Czech territory offer better quality. Car and hiking maps, as well as travel and hiking guides, which you are welcome to use, are available in the apartments. However, we ask that you treat them with care so that other guests can still enjoy them. Winter sports The Giant Mountains offer good winter sports opportunities for downhill and cross-country skiers due to their relative snow reliability. Some chair lifts have been renewed in recent years. Drag lifts are constantly being added. They are significantly cheaper than in German low mountain ranges and the Alps. However, so far they have hardly worked in a network. Currently and a further expanded with EU funds. In Karpacz you can hover with the chair lift to the mountain station on the Kleine Koppe (1,350 m). From here, a demanding slope with a length of 2.6 km and a height difference of 500 m leads to the valley station. Another moderate difficulty descent begins near the Strzecha Akademicka (Hampelbaude). From there you can also take a sledge down into the valley. There are drag lifts from Strzecha Akademicka and more than a dozen more around Karpacz. The best conditions for cross-country skiers are in the Jakuszyce (Jakobsthal) cross-country center near the Czech border, where the famous 50 km long 'Piast' cross-country skiing begins. The weather The average temperature (day and Night) is between 15 and 18 degrees C in summer, best hiking weather. The higher you climb, the cooler it gets, of course. The temperature decreases by half a degree per hundred meters of altitude and is on the Schneekoppe in summer at 8 to 9 degrees C. There is often an inversion weather situation in the autumn and winter months. Then slopes, mountain meadows and ridge paths shine in the pleasantly mild, warm sun, while the valleys sink into thick, damp and cold mist. However, it can get quite stormy on the peaks, especially in winter. The precipitation depends on the altitude and the sun exposure. It rains more in the mountains than in the foreland. On summer days you have to expect a quick change in the weather and you should have appropriate clothing in your backpack. The Giant Mountains pride themselves on being one of the snowiest low mountain ranges in Europe. Snow depths of two to three meters on the mountains are not uncommon. The best winter sports weather is in January and February. Spring begins in April, in the ridges in May or June. The summer months and September / October bring the best hiking weather The environment 15 km from Karpacz is Jelenia Gora (Hirschberg), the gateway to the Giant Mountains. The distances from there are 160 km to Prague, 180 km to Dresden, 120 km to Wroclaw and are therefore ideal for excursions that are also offered by local organizers. There is also a multitude of scenic and cultural sights in the Bohemian-Silesian triangle between Jelenia Gora, Walbrzych (Waldenburg) and Trutnov (Trautenau). These include the Hauptmann House in Jagniatkow (Agnetendorf) as well as Grüssau Monastery (Krzesow), the Hohenelbe (Vrchlabi), Fürstenstein (Ksiaz) and Kynsburg (Chojnik) castles and places like Schömberg (Chemsko Slaskie), Johannisbad (Janske Lazne) or Trutnov. In addition to the Schneekoppe, the large and small pond, the many remarkable rock formations and some romantic waterfalls, the natural beauties include the unique landscape of the Aderspacher Felsenstadt.
