Historical background on Casino Doxi Stracca It dates back to the XVIII century, Casino Doxi Stracca is in the countryside of Alezio, surrounded by grapevines and olive trees which are characteristic of Salento. This Casino, which today is a cozy villa for luxury holidays, is part of a big complex which consists of the chapel, other groups of buildings, former water tanks and granaries, which are proofs of the golden age of this building, when the millstone and oil-mill were enough to feed the families that lived in this complex. You can still feel its magic and history while walking in the garden. The inner garden of Casino Doxi Stracca, with the refined colonnade and the small rural shrine, is connected to the garden, which is overlooked by the complex, by an arch with the engraving "Villa Valentino", which is the original name of this villa. The artistic value has been highlighted in many magazines and its historical background is as interesting: it once belonged to the noble Doxi-Stracca family, which owns a baroque building in Gallipoli. In 1800, the Casino was bought by the Neapolitan Valentino family. Epaminonda Valentino and the Giovine Italia secret meetings at this Casino One of the patriots was Epaminonda, son of the lawyer Vito and Cristina Chiarizio, one of the "madri della patria" during the Neapolitan revolution in 1799. In 1838, Epaminonda got married with Maria Rosa de Pace, sister of the revolutionary hero Maria Antonietta, who dedicated her life to the Italian unification. Here, in December 1835, Maria Antonietta swore loyalty to Giovane Italia. She lived here from 1838 with her mother, sister and brother-in-law. Here, on May 9th 1849, Epaminonda got arrested, guilty of partecipating to the revolutionary riots in Naples: he took shelter in the granary which is still visible. He died in the prison of Lecce, where he shared his cell with Sigismondo Castromediano and Achille Portone.
