There are a number of places to go e.g. 'The Pilot Inn' at Dungeness, acclaimed in 'Time Out' magazine and 'The Good Pub Guide'. If you want something more up-market, the Mermaid Inn at Rye, dating from 1156, has an award winning restaurant situated in a romantic setting. For your self-catering needs, there is a large Sainsburys in New Romney and also a butcher, selling locally produced organic meat. The town of New Romney also boasts an excellent delicatessen, and several good tea and coffee shops. A permanent farmers market is near Burmarsh. Appledore is a short drive and a recommended visit for a beautiful location. Ideas for days out - Hythe is an attractive, Cinque Port town with small shops, antique shops and an antiques market every Friday and Saturday, also boating and fishing along the Royal Military canal. Rye is a medieval town with picturesque cobbled streets ('Hornblower' was filmed at that location), unusual shops selling artwork, antiques and collectibles. Dymchurch is a traditional seaside town with sandy beaches, fun fair, pubs, shops, cafes, and is home of Russell Thorndyke's 'Smuggling Vicar, Dr Syn. If you wish to go to France for the day, 'le shuttle' will whisk you to Calais from Folkestone in less than an hour, or you can take a 30 minute flight to Le Touquet from nearby Lydd airport. If you enjoy visiting historical castles, or houses and beautiful gardens, there are several within easy reach of New Romney, including Smallhythe Place, Sissinghurst (gardens designed by Vita Sackville-West), and Dover Castle with its secret wartime tunnels.
