It’s not often that you can holiday in a little piece of English history, but you can do just that at the Unique Retreat The Unique Retreat: the last signal box on the old Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway. The property was also once owned by Peter Blake, the artist who designed The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper album cover, so there’s pop culture history here too. The entrance of the Unique Retreat leads you in to a generously sized kitchen diner, where you can wine and dine the evenings away. Then walk through the light-filled passageway, which has access to the garden, to find the bright, airy master bedroom. Recline in the comfortable kingsize bed to watch a film on the large TV, and wake up to beautiful views of rural Somerset through the floor to ceiling windows. A staircase leads you down to a spacious spa-like bathroom, with every luxury laid on for your relaxing break: a sauna, double-ended bath and large shower cubicle. Perfect for a spot of pampering before treating yourself to a night at the Fox and Badger pub, just up the hill. Friends and family can also be accommodated in the lovingly restored Shepherd’s Hut bedroom, which sits in its own private space in the garden. Cosy the evening away with a good book by the log-burning stove. A handy outdoor cloakroom can be found at the front entrance, and a few steps up the original signal box timber stairs leads you to the most interesting feature at the Unique Retreat: the Artist’s Studio. This was the original signal box of the disused railway line, later used as a painting studio. Now you can admire the idyllic panorama of the rolling Wellow valley while relaxing on the sofa by the fire, or continue the creative traditions of the Artist’s Studio by using this light and inspiring room to write, paint or read. Outside you will find private parking spaces next to the front door, and a lawned garden area perfect for summer games with friends, or a runaround for your canine companions. You can also soak up the superb Somerset views while seated on the patio, a glass of wine in your hand. A true retreat from the hurly-burly of everyday life. The village lies on the Oolitic limestone belt which continues as the Cotswold Hills to the (Website hidden by Airbnb) the south west lies the Carboniferous limestone of The Mendip Hills. This area comprises rolling hills with small field enclosures and hedges. The settlement sits on the south facing valley terrace above Wellow Brook and most of the village is within the Conservation Area. The village has a vibrant community with many groups and societies and could be said to constitute a quintessential English village in that there is a church, school, public house, village hall, community shop, community transport and of course the beautiful countryside.
