Margaret's Cottage; a grade 2 listed cottage in the heart of North Yorkshire
Margaret's Cottage is perfect for a serene getaway. The cottage is located in the peaceful village of Old Malton, which is home to two pubs as well as Malton Priory which dates back to 1150. self catered | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 4 | pet friendly | central heating | open fire | oven & hob | dishwasher | washer/dryer | bath & shower Margaret's Cottage is just a 30 minute drive away from both the Yorkshire Moors and the spectacular North Yorkshire coast. And the bustling market town of Malton is only a 15 minute walk away. Known as Yorkshire's food capital, there you'll find an abundance of cafes and coffee shops, restaurants of all kinds of cuisines, and bars and pubs-a-plenty. In keeping with the style of the 250-year-old building, Margaret's Cottage has been restored to its former cosy and homely glory. The living room has an open fire to snuggle up by after a long day in the unpredictable English weather. The kitchen has all the usual amenities: an oven, induction hob, a microwave, dishwasher and a washing machine and tumble dryer. Upstairs you'll find the master bedroom with a double bed and an additional bedroom with two single beds so there's enough room for four people. There is a toilet and a bathroom equipped with a bath/shower (that has surprisingly great water pressure for such an old building). There is heating throughout the cottage. The cottage and the Royal Oak pub next door were clearly built at the same time (we believe in the 18th century). Both buildings are grade II listed, the pub has been extended several times with work carried out around 140 years ago, and the cottage has a Victorian extension. For many years, the cottage was part of the Fitzwilliam Estate and the last notable tenant was a lady called Margaret Evans. When we came to buy the cottage, we were greeted by locals as "the people who've bought Margaret's Cottage" or "aaah you live in Margaret's Cottage". Gradually we came to refer to the house by that name, and now, any desire we had to use any other name is long gone. Margaret lived in the cottage from being 2 weeks old to the time at which she had to go into care. She'd lived in the cottage for over 85 years! If you come and stay, have a chat with some of the locals. They're sure to have plenty of entertaining anecdotes of Margaret and her cottage.
