A bustling west coast harbour town, Oban has lots going on for visitors at any time of the year. It is central for touring Argyll and is known as the ’Gateway to the Isles’, with ferries leaving daily to many of islands, such as Mull, Iona, Staffa and Lismore. In keeping with its reputation as the ’seafood capital of Scotland’, there are some excellent restaurants, cafés and pubs for relaxing in after a pleasant day out exploring all the wonderful scenery and interesting attractions which Argyll has to offer. You can enjoy a pleasant stroll along the Esplanade at sunset, or walk through the Dunollie woods to Dunollie Castle and Museum. There is a lovely sandy beach at Ganavan, just a mile’s drive or walk along the coastal road, and there is also a kayaking centre which launches directly into Oban Bay, as well as daily wildlife spotting boat trips from the Esplanade. At Glencruitten, on the outskirts of the town, there is a hilly 18-hole golf course, an excellent riding centre and some longer walks through Glencruitten Estate. The area around Oban has an abundance of wildlife with golden eagles, basking sharks, porpoises and otters often seen. In less than an hour, you can be exploring the mountains of Glencoe to the north or Inveraray to the south, where you can visit Inveraray Jail and Auchindrain Museum. Nearby, there are also ruined castles such as Dunstaffnage and Kilchurn, beautiful gardens at Arduaine and Crarae, and sites of historical interest, including Kilmartin Glen and the slate island of Easdale. There are so many outdoor activities in the area include diving, sailing, kayaking, horse riding, golf, mountain biking and fishing. Glencoe and Aonach Mhor in Fort William are easily accessible and also offer popular walking, mountain biking, climbing and skiing. Beach 1½ miles. Shop 100 yards, pub 200 yards and restaurant 50 yards. Free WiFi
