The cottage is located on the main road passing through Colinton Village, a charming suburban village on the south-west perimeter of the City of Edinburgh. Colinton Village is a very picturesque conservation area and is steeped in local history and charm. It is located 6km south west of the city-centre with a fast and frequent (and clean) bus service which runs 24 hours. Originally sited within a steep-sided glen on a convenient fording point on the Water of Leith, and expanding from there, Colinton's history dates back to before the 11th century. Close to the Water of Leith is Colinton Parish Church, correctly called St.Cuthbert's Parish Church, originally founded as the Church of Halis (Hailes) around 1095 by Elthelred, third son of Malcolm III and Queen Margaret. The church is particularly picturesque in its setting, which appears more rural than suburban. The current exterior largely dates from 1907 but the structure dates from 1650. It groups pleasantly with its manse, the old schoolhouse and the offertory house at the entrance. The entrance is marked by a lych gate, rare in Scotland and more common in southern England. The cemetery (on the lower slopes to the south) contains the village war memorial. One unique grave within the cemetery is a Norwegian War Grave. The nearby 15th century Colinton Castle, in the grounds of what is now Merchiston Castle School, was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell during his invasion of Scotland. Following repair, the castle was subsequently partially demolished by the artist Alexander Nasmyth in order to create a picturesque ruin. Other notable figures with connections to Colinton include: Robert Louis Stevenson who spent the summers of his childhood at the manse when his grandfather was the village's Parish Minister; the philanthropist James Gillespie; and architects Sir Robert Rowand Anderson and John James Burnet who all lived in the village. Louis Stephenson's statue is located next to the churchyard. In addition to our cottage, number of innovative Arts and Crafts style cottages were also constructed in the village in the early 1900s by the architect Sir Robert Lorimer. Between 1909 and 1915, the War Office constructed Redford Barracks to the east of the village. The barracks represent the largest military installation built in Scotland since Fort George in the Highlands and they provide military accommodation, together with offices and training facilities. Colinton Village hosts the Edinburgh International Harp Festival each spring in the grounds of Merchiston Castle School, a military private boarding school, situated 5 minutes walk away from our cottage. This is one of the biggest music festivals in the world, of its type. The village was the location for numerous mills producing textiles, snuff, and paper. It is thought that the first banknotes produced by the Bank of Scotland were printed on paper manufactured in Colinton. The village is surrounded by leafy green walks and parks - a trail from the village along the Water of Leith can take you into town in just less than one hour. Ideal for Nature lovers, dog walkers, or those that want to see Edinburgh from a different perspective. There is a choice of 2 local pubs, 2 award winning restaurants and a line of local and speciality shops - all on the same street as the cottage and within 2 minutes walk. Colinton offers you a perfect mix of rural village life, with all the attractions of Scotland's vibrant capital within easy reach. Click on the 'Guidebook' section of this listing for an accurate map view of our location and local amenities. Easy! Just outside the cottage there is a bus stop that provides the number 400 bus which runs to and from the airport approximately each 30 minutes until late evening. Addtionally, the 45 bus service runs to and from the city centre. (about 20-25 minutes in off-peak times). This runs half hourly during the day. It also serves the nearby campuses of both Heriot Watt University and Napier University. A second bus stop (approx 250 metres away) provides the number 10 and 16 buses, which run every 10 minutes into the city during the day, every 20 minutes from 7pm to midnight. Overnight, the N16 bus runs hourly from Princes Street in the city centre to Colinton, until 4am. This night service takes 35 - 40 minutes from Princes Street. Buses cost £1.70 for a single daytime journey and £4 for an all-day unlimited use ticket across the network. Overnight buses are slightly more expensive. So, you will never be stuck getting home! Note: Service 400 runs from the airport virtually to our front door! This service carries a surcharge from the EDI International terminal building, stance no. 2. Please note that there is no public transport on 25th December. Limited services run on the 26th & 31st December and on the 1st January. Check out the 'Traveline Scotland' website for more details. If you are travelling around the city by bus - download the Transport for Edinburgh app for up to the moment timings, directions and ability to pay for your tickets cashless. Edinburgh Airport is located 8km North West from Colinton Village - approximately 15 minutes by Taxi via the motorway. A day-time taxi to and from the airport is approx £16. Uber is available in Edinburgh and is slightly cheaper than a licenced cab. I live in the cottage with my partner, Paul and our 2 young dogs, Meg and Angus, and we will be sharing our house with you. You are welcome to bring a well behaved pet by prior arrangement, please message us before hand to discuss arrangements if you wish to book in your pet. Despite being totally modernised in 2012, please do note that the building is historically listed and therefore guests with accessibility needs may struggle on steep stairways to access the breakfast room on the garden level. The gardens themselves have steep terracing. We have been hosting for over 5 years on AirBnB and LOVE to meet visitors from all countries and cultures.
