Smugglers was once an old stable attached to the back of our house. It’s still linked to the house, but is self contained. It’s unusual shapes and fixtures make it very quirky and would suit people that like something a bit different. There is a main double bed and a mezzanine deck ideal for relaxing on. The little kitchen allows you to stay in and cook for yourself if you fancy a cozy night in. The courtyard in front of smugglers can be used for bbq’s if the weather is kind! You could be mistaken for thinking that smugglers is tiny from the front entrance, but it stretches right back and to the side. With high ceilings and roof windows the space has a light and airy feel. Guests can come and go as they please and have their own entrance into smugglers. If you walk up the path to our house there’s a side gate which leads on to the courtyard- smugglers is right in front of you! We always like a chat with our guests, but appreciate that some people just need some time away with peace and quiet. Freshwater Bay is a friendly neighbourhood where most people know each other. Smugglers is just down the road from the pretty thatched church and about five minutes walk from the beach. It’s a stony beach, but good for swimming (bring some beach shoes and sun cream - as it’s a real sun trap under the brilliant white cliffs). There’s also a bus stop just up the road and open top bus does tours of the area. The quaint little harbour town of Yarmouth is only five minutes away by car or you could take a beautiful walk along the causeway and through the nature reserve. It will take about an hour and is well worth the effort. Alum Bay and the Neddles lighthouse is a good walk over the downs or a bus trip away. It’s one of the most photographed places in the world! Guests can park along the road for free. Occasionally you’ll have to park further up the road, but there’s always a space nearby. The bus stop is just up the road. Cycling is popular on the island and you’re welcome to arrive on a bike. You would however have to bring your cycles up the path and into the back courtyard (people tend to leave them against the front hedge and pop a padlock on them!) We have two rather old little dogs that might bark when you arrive, but they’ll soon settle down. They do go in the back courtyard occasionally but are not allowed in smugglers. A little chicken called Rocket also wanders about and she’s very friendly too!
