A period apartment just a few moments from Maryport harbour, beach and museums. Situated on bustling Senhouse Street, with independent shops and cafes, it is situated in an 18th century building above a lovely cafe which has an outdoor seating area. Ideal for a break all year round, Maryport has a train station and there is free parking in the car park behind the property. Just 20 mins to the Lake District or to beautiful beaches in an AONB, it is ideal for short breaks and long vacations. There is a spacious lounge fronting onto Senhouse Street offering two comfy sofas, coffee tables, and lovely view of harbour (see photo). The bedroom has a comfy double-bed with divan drawers plus double wardrobe and bedside table. The bathroom and kitchen are lovely, stylish and very spacious. The kitchen is fitted with new microwave, kettle and toaster. There is a Bosch washing machine plumbed in and large fridge-freezer, plus separate fridge if required. Being above a coffee shop/cafe, there is the lovely smell of fresh ground coffee tempting you downstairs for breakfast. Maryport offers several free car parks, including a small one to the rear of the property where the access to the flat is on Catherine Street. There is a key box on the back gate leading into the coffee shop's courtyard and one outside the flat's front door. Key will be in a lockbox next to the gate at the property. Maryport is a small town with a rich history, built on the site of a Roman port, and is lucky enough to have a marina, a harbour and a beach. There is a Roman and a Maritime museum and an aquarium, and Clip 'n Climb at the Wave Centre. Further afield, 20-30 mins by car, is the Lake District, Winlatter Forest and beautiful Mirehead Gardens, plus the town of Keswick offering boat trips and water sports. Staying on the coast, drive up towards Allonby and you will pass the golf course just outside Maryport and then continue for the beaches in an official area of outstanding natural beauty. If history is your thing then Hadrian's Wall is a must. Maryport has a train station which runs directly from Carlisle and is well served by buses. There is a small car park behind the apartment which is free to use, alternatively on street parking offers a disc zone, discs can be obtained from the town council in the building next door to the apartment on Senhouse Street. Parking has no restrictions in the evening. Being such an old building, the property has a few quirks. Please note that the internal doors don't shut fully and the bathroom window will not open. At the time of posting this listing, there is no wifi although this will be in place w/c 26 July 2021. A smart TV will also be provided, although the photos do not reflect this. To keep cleaning costs to a minimum, it would be appreciated if you could leave outdoor shoes in the entrance porch and if you could leave the flat as you find it in terms of returning things you use to where you found them at the beginning of your stay. There is to be no smoking in the flat and no pets are allowed inside the flat. I hope you have a very enjoyable stay and if you have any problems whatsoever, please don't hesitate to contact me, Julia. Further information about local history and other attractions: Golfing: A local and friendly Golf Club with a blend of both links holes and parkland holes in one round. Located on the Solway Firth with breath-taking views of the Lake District National Park. Offers and packages are available for visitors. Silloth golf course is just 12 minutes from Maryport offering world class playing conditions, glorious vistas and plentiful birdies. Fergal O'Leary who works for Top 100 Golf Courses states: "Pound for pound, this is the best value for golf in the UK and arguably the most underrated course in the continent. ... Silloth is banging down the door for being included in the top 12 courses in England. ... Silloth is full of hidden greens, blind driving zones, large central hills that obscure targets on par fives and small plateau greens on long downwind par threes." Maryport's History: Maryport was the creation of the prominent Senhouse family in the 18th century, who developed the small fishing village into a coal port. It has an aquarium, maritime museum, Roman museum and The Wave Arts and Sports centre. It was the site of a Roman port, a nearby fort, dating from the 5th century, was one of a series of fortifications constructed by the Romans in this area. Many of the Roman remains are now in the Senhouse Roman Museum, once a Royal Naval Reserve Station. The history of the town can be explored at the Maritime Museum, the Senhouse Roman Museum, and in the harbour area. When the Romans left in around 410AD, the port was no doubt a landing place for the invading Norse Vikings and until the 18th Century was a quiet fishing village with just a few residents. It has a legacy of coal mining and ship building and was the birthplace and early home of Thomas Henry Ismay who went on to found the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, more commonly known as the White Star Line. By the time of Thomas Henry's death in 1899 the White Star Line was commissioning the building of the largest and most luxurious ships in the world. His son, Joseph Bruce Ismay, took over and was instrumental in the creation of what was hoped would be the jewel in the company's crown - the Titanic. He was a passenger on the liner during its fatal voyage. The Maryport Maritime Museum contains an interesting look into Maryport‘s proud maritime heritage. There are a variety of exhibits including paintings, models, and many interesting objects from a whales tooth to telescopes and tools. There are displays about Thomas Ismay owner of the Titanic and Fletcher Christian, of the mutiny on the Bounty fame who was was born in the small village of Eaglesfield, just outside of Cockermouth in Cumberland.
