Location advantage: 5 km to Marayoor sandalwood forest;15 Km to Chinnar wildlife sanctuary;12 Km to Kanthaloor Any time Things to Do In Marayoor • Marayoor Jaggery Aside from its natural sandal forests and immnunerable locations of scenic beauty, Marayoor is best known for its extensive sugarcane cultivation, the major crop of Marayoor and Kanthalloor. Here, more than 2500 acres of land is under sugarcane cultivation. A product of such cultivation is the world famous delicacy called Marayoor Jaggery. In sugar cane farms, manufacturing units are set up and the Jaggery is manufactured by the farmers, who mostly belong to the Muthuva tribe. The peculiar geographical location of Marayoor, which nestles amid the forests of the Western Ghats gives the sugar cane a distinct geographical identity. Added to this, the age old specialized skill of the local people in making the jaggery in the farm itself, make it a unique product. • Muniyara visit : 5kms from Marys Villa These dolmens belong to the Iron Age. These dolmenoids were burial chambers made of four stones placed on edge and covered by a fifth stone called the cap stone. Some of these Dolmenoids contain several burial chambers, while others have a quadrangle scooped out in laterite and lined on the sides with granite slabs. These are also covered with cap stones. • Visit to the fruit plantation and Vegetable Farms at Kanthalloor: 14 Kms A veritable land of fruits and vegetables, Kanthalloor sports farms full of ripe apples, plums, pomegranates etc. not commonly seen in Kerala. There is no need for anyone to go to Ootty or Kashmir to see the cultivation of apples. At 5000 ft above sea level, Kanthalloor offers congenial atmosphere for the cultivation of apples. Although its skin is a bit thick, the Kanthalloor apples are rather sweet. The cultivation is done with minimum use of chemical fertilizers. Guava, gooseberry, orange, eggfruits, peach, passion fruit etc are grown a plenty here. Non-Kerala vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, carrot, beans, potato, beetroot, garlic etc are also cultivated here. The produce is taken to wholesale centres in Tamil Nadu from where they are distributed to different markets in Kerala. • Chinnar wild life sanctuary: 17 Kms. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is a well-known reserve that extends over an area of 90 sq km. Recognized as a wildlife sanctuary in 1984, it lies in the rain shadow region of the Western Ghats. As a result, Chinnar gets only about 48 rainy days in a year during the months of October and November when Northeast monsoons are at work. From Marayoor jeeps, scooter rickshaws or buses can be boarded for the sanctuary visit. Once past Marayoor, the organised neat looking plantations give way to more wild and natural surroundings. • Rajamalai: 35Kms The most sought after destination in Munnar is the Eravikulam National Park, the first of its kind in Kerala, where the endangered Nilgiri Thar is protected. Spread over 97 sq. km., this park holds the largest viable population of Tahr, several other species of rare animals, birds and butterflies. The park offers a magnificent view of the tea plantations and also of the rolling hills caressed by blankets of mist. The park becomes a hot destination when the hill slopes get covered in a carpet of blue, resulting from the flowering of Neelakurinji. It is a plant endemic to this part of the Western Ghats which blooms once in twelve years.
