This cabin has been built mainly from reclaimed/upcycled materials. It overlooks the River Wreake, where there is a canoe that you are welcome to use during your stay. ASK about our bespoke practical and theoretical courses for all ages. We run canoe building holidays and canoe paddle making days here, and between us can offer a wide range of environmental, wood related and literary courses to suit your interests. Ideal for a family looking for a totally unique break. 90% of the cabin is recycled/upcycled/reclaimed materials.). Downstairs there is a double bed and a single bed, both of which have bedding provided. Upstairs on the sleeping loft , there are a variety of mattresses and pillows which you can move around to suit your family. Bedding is NOT normally provided for the sleeping loft so bring your own sleeping bags if you plan to sleep up there. There is a pile of sleeping bags up there in case anyone forgets, however. There is electricity to the cabin, but the toilet is "off grid". ( composting toilet plus camper-van style cassette toilet). Basic cooking facilities: fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle, coffee maker, bread maker and Halogen oven. Baby High Chair available. Child safety gate on the stairs ( which are rather steep). Use of the Birchcanoes canoe on the river here ( the canoes are built here, we run canoe building holidays) Laundry room ( £2 per load for washing, same for drying: use of the washing line is free..) Camp fire spot near the cabin You might want to learn to make a paddle using traditional methods and tools ( extra charge applies) You might even want to build a Birchcanoes canoe with us ( in which case, your accommodation fees will be refunded, as that is included in the cost of canoe building) There is a pool table, and tennis table, and a field for games like Badminton. We live on site, but can leave you entirely to your own devices, you can come and go as you please. If you need anything, do come and ask us. Pretty river valley dotted with lovely old villages. Lovely thatched pub serving great meals just 1 mile down the lane in the village of Hoby ( the Blue Bell). Worth booking ahead for weekend meals. We are situated right in the countryside, with no neighbours, nice and secluded. We have a field where you can play Badminton etc, there are kingfishers and otters in the garden ( otters very rarely seen, kingfishers often spotted). Lots of other wildlife around ( ask about the list of species seen here, for children to tick off) The 5a bus runs between Melton Mowbray and Leicester every 20 minutes throughout the day and early evening. The bus stop is 500 metres away. We run birchcanoes canoe building holidays here, you are welcome to see the process and try our canoes on the river here. In addition to the River Cabin we have another home made wooden cabin ( very different from the River Cabin), a Tiny House Trailer and a Yurt, so you might well encounter other guests at some point, although we have 2.5 acres here so plenty of space. You are welcome to use our canoes on the river here. We have bicyles including a tandem which you may with to borrow during your stay. There is an ELECTRIC CAR RECHARGING POINT available. You are also welcome to have a camp fire ( I can show you where you can forage for sticks) There is a big open grass area where you are welcome to play ball games etc. We live in the old railway station ( Grade 2 listed building) on the site, and will try and greet you when you arrive. If you need anything during your stay, please do ask, but you will be left to yourselves unless you need anything. However, we are always happy to meet people, explain what there is to see locally etc. We welcome suggestions, and you will see lots of examples of how the place has evolved over the years as a result of the brilliant ideas people have shared with us. Carole has prepared a big folder with local information in it. There is a nice thatched pub which serves meals until 9pm, a mile down the road ( The Blue Bell, at Hoby). The valley here is very pretty, with little villages, grassy fields and hedges and occasional woodlands. One of the National Cycle Ways runs right by our gate. In Thrussington, ( about 1.5 miles away) there is a lovely delicatessen/cafe which you will enjoy. The 5a bus from Melton Mowbray to Leicester stops about 500 metres from the cabin, on the A607. There are railway stations at Melton, Syston and Leicester with good connections. We are about 14 minutes from the M1 ( junction 21a) If you need a lift, I will be happy to run you to and from the station if I am available. The railway still runs by the property, you will certainly hear the trains.. The toilet and shower room is spartan. There is a plastic shed near the cabin with an electric shower and fan heater. There is a "Futility Room" with washing machine and tumble dryer. Just leave £2 if you use either machine. The door is always unlocked.
