Noank is a village on a small peninsula at the western edge of the entrance to Mystic River Harbor. With water on three sides and the double-tracked railroad corridor cutting it off on the northwest, Noank has an isolated feeling, much like an island. The Noank area was originally inhabited by the Pequot people during the summer months, and was referred to as Nauyang, meaning “point of land”. The Pequot were driven out after the 1655 Pequot War and the land was acquired via lottery by James Morgan in 1712. Over the years the Noank community grew through fishing, lobstering, and boat-building and in 1850 brothers John and Robert Palmer started a shipyard that eventually grew into the largest facility for building or repairing wooden vessels in southern New England, employing over 300 men and credited with producing over 600 wooden vessels. Noank also lays claim to one of the longest running Memorial Day parades in the country, taking place since 1876. Most of the community was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, primarily because of the residential architecture that has been so well preserved. Landmarks include the famous Ford’s Lobster and Abbott's. Neither restaurant takes reservations, but a wait is well rewarded. What is better than a fresh lobster roll? Nothing! Your foodie dreams will come true at The Noank House! The real “landmark” of Noank is not a single building or place, but the collection of historic homes that make up its center. It is quite simply one of the most charming areas in coastal CT. Summer days and nights have visitors flocking to the restaurants in town, but otherwise, it’s a sleepy little place where residents enjoy the peace and small-town charm that surrounds them. But we actually enjoy it MORE in the Fall & Winter months. There are public tennis courts, great walking trails, wonderful nearby parks and nature walks, church, grocery, package store, restaurants and waterfront all within a short walk from the property. Everything you need it there without having to drive! Don't forget to enjoy breakfast or lunch at the iconic Carson's General Store. Carson’s Store opened its doors in 1907 and has been feeding the food aficionados especially those who want to kick-start the day with a nutritious and tasty breakfast. Enjoying some grand varieties of omelets, sandwiches, pancakes, burgers, fries with exclusive toppings and more, Carson’s Store has eked out a niche as the best breakfast and lunch in Noank. The most wonderful thing about The Noank House is the location. Close to Stonington, Mystic, Old Saybrook CT and nearby Westerly and Watch Hill RI. There are so many towns to explore and SO little time :) The Noank House is situated between Boston, MA and New York, NY in coastal CT. It is easily accessibly by Amtrack and a car is not needed to stay as you can take an Uber from public transportation and once you are here, you are within walking distance to restaurants, a small grocery store/deli and package store. The Noank House is a 2 mile walk from downtown Mystic. And oh the walking! Our favorite walk is a 5 mile round trip to Groton Long Point where you pass marina's and then have a perfect view of open water and can watch the sailboats all day long with little beaches/points of interest along the way. Interested in a shorter walk? Walking through Historic Noank is about 1-2 miles and has the sweet waterfront park with great ocean views at the bottom of town. If you would like to rent bikes during your stay, check out Adventure Mystic for your exploring needs! We prefer to be a non-smoking property. If you must smoke during your stay an ashtray is located in the kitchen in the drawer next to the stove but we ask that you smoke ONLY at the water's edge and not near the house please. Outdoor spaces are monitored by video. Extra guests are not allowed on property without consent previously. We have a no party policy too. We lovingly decorated the space with many fine things and ask that you treat it as your own home :) If there is breakage/damage during your stay please let us know prior to your departure so we can bill accordingly. We appreciate it!
