A trusted person will hand over the keys to guests upon arrival, show them the house and be their point of contact on site. You really don’t have to search for long to find Defereggen valley’s very special and unique properties. They are obvious – set in the midst of the Hohe Tauern National Park, nestling in and enclosed by the mountains of the Defereggen range, the Rieserferner group, the Lasörling group and the Schober group. Hardly any other valley in the Alps offers so many enjoyment, adventure and recreation possibilities around the water like the Defereggental. Along with tempting landscape which is pivotal and defining, since it is the protective Hohe Tauern National Park that makes Defereggen valley one of the most unspoilt high mountain valleys in the Alps. St. Jakob in Defereggen is something quite special for many reasons. St. Jakob has a full 891 inhabitants. Doesn’t sound like a lot, but it is; particularly since Defereggen valley is not exactly densely populated. Since here the fact that is enough to be the ‘main town’, one that is the biggest and the most population dense town in the valley, reveals more about the valley than about the town itself. What probably should be said however is that the main town in Defereggen valley has so many special features, which makes it what it is – idyllic. Set in a wonderful location and certainly worthy of a few lengthy stays. St. Jakob has some impressive figures. For instance, St. Jakob, covering 185.96 km2, is the second largest town in the district of Lienz. A full 123 km2 of which is protected due to the Hohe Tauern National Park. This means there is lots of space and unspoilt, natural surroundings. The mountainous section of the district area is considerable, so there is only a little bit of space for agriculture and settlements. Less than almost anywhere else. This is all the better since it means that there is more room for nature and the evident beauty, so visitors get to enjoy more and to gaze in amazement. Ski slopes and lifts in St Jakobs are just 2Km away
