I am an Airbnb message away to assist in any way possible. There is no question too silly or small, just ask. It's my pleasure to help. I try to anticipate all needs and questions in advance, and provide them in the binders on the coffee table. One thing I would like to mention is that I may not always be available in person due to my work schedule - I work nights, and sleep much of the day. I mention this primarily in case you send a message and don't get a quick response in the morning to early afternoon. If you need something - at check in during the evening, is the best time to reach me! I have made up a Guidebook of special (and secret!) favorite places of mine for you to check out as I've lived right in this area my whole life, and I have a more extensive copy waiting for you in the apartment so you can fit right in like a local. We are centrally located to everything! Please read this carefully to be sure we are close to where YOU want to go (we want 5 stars!! nothing less!!): Centrally located to everything Maine has to offer! Easy access to I95 & I395, and Route 1A & Route 9. The neighborhood has a historic small town vibe, being the area first settled in town. You can walk from our quiet neighborhood two blocks and find a 24-hour Irving gas station if you've forgotten any necessities. Just a couple blocks further is an IGA grocery store, and a summertime ice cream-fried food stand. There is a park two blocks away in one direction (Dougherty Recreation Complex), and another park about 4 blocks away in the opposite direction (Brewer Auditorium Complex). A short walk in the other direction leads you to the Brewer Riverwalk, a very pleasant walking area along the Penobscot River, where you can often hear music concerts playing from across the river. You can walk to downtown Bangor to enjoy free music concerts, Waterfront concerts or shopping. There are plentiful local pubs and breweries to explore, and amazing restaurants and seafood. Antiquing is a lot of fun here. There are local farmers markets to enjoy. Bangor has a City Forest Boardwalk (bogwalk), with labled plants and trees, it's very interesting. LOCATION INFORMATION: Centrally located to everything! About an hour to Acadia National Park, 30 minutes to Fort Knox, 21 minutes to Hermon Mountain skiing. 1 hr 45 mins away from Calais and the Canadian border. Four minutes drive to Eastern Maine Medical Center (EMMC), and five minutes to St. Joseph's Hospital. The Casino in Bangor is very close, and Stephen King's house is 7 minutes drive. 12 minutes to Bangor International Airport. Public transportation here is the BAT bus, which goes right by our building. You can look up the schedule, and stand at the end of the driveway, and simply wave to the bus, and it will stop for you. The BAT bus goes as far away as the University of Maine in Orono, and to all local areas. I have a copy of the schedule inside the apartment for easy reference. Of course, you can also walk, taxi or take an Uber. This is a garden style property, which means that your entrance door opens to the outdoors, not a hallway. Please don't leave the front door open, because Maine is a climate with insects and animals that love being invited inside. Regretfully, this historic second floor apartment is not accessible to those with certain needs. It requires a climb of 17 steps to reach the unit, and there is also a step inside the unit between the master bedroom and the living room. It has some narrow areas in the bathroom and doorways typical of historical houses. One thing that is helpful, the stairs are newer-designed and not treacherous steep old house stairs! To access the small bedroom, you have to walk through the master bedroom (this is what is known as a "railroad apartment"). Of course, the small bedroom has it's own door like any other bedroom, as does the master bedroom. Please note that in rural Maine, cellphone service, wifi, and satillite can go out in many places; we have discovered that sometimes guests' cell service may not cover areas this far north. It can be a very wise idea to print out your directions to our space and go old school, as well as print or write down your key code, in the instance that your cell service goes out late at night on your way here. Just in case! The apartment door automatically locks every time the door closes, so please do take note of your key code so that you don't get locked out, for example, if you went out to sit in the balcony, in, say, your underwear :0 This historical property is "slightly older", from 1860. This means that most of the building is not modern, although it is clean as a whistle! The bathroom and tub have older looking tile although it is sparkling clean. You may notice the same with the kitchen cabinets and counter being older, although we are proud of the cabinets, as this historical building's first owner and builder, George Rider, built them. We put away the balcony furniture from sometime in October to May, weather depending. The outdoor furniture unfortunately won't be out - but the snow likely will - and the slopes will be open nearby :) Winter is also a great time for snowshoeing, and crosscountry skiing. There are is a rental shop nearby and trails. Not to mention sledding! There are other people living in the building, and you may see them on the grounds - shocking, I know ;) The building's owners live in the building, and there is an Airbnb guest suite in the building.
