Workington Town Center Dearham has a strong, interesting history with stones in the churchyard dating back to the tenth century. During the Civil War John Lamplugh, the Lord of the Manor, fought for Cromwell against the royalists. Later when the royalists were restored to power, Charles II ordered that all men of Dearham who participated, be arrested & transported to the American Colony. John Lamplugh was sent to Labrador and when he was freed he helped to form the Hudson Bay Company. Josiah Wedgewood, the world famous potter, was born in Dearham. He was the son of Jonathan Wedgewood and Jane Sherwen who married in Dearham Church in 1708. Josiah was born in 1730 but when he was only 3 weeks old the family moved to Burslem in Staffordshire, where Josiah’s birth was registered and he was christened. Other members of the Wedgewood family still live in the area.
