Ideal for families
Solitude - Relax, rejuvenate and unplug in this ultimate family getaway. You can gaze at the stars, and listen to the sounds of nature from your cozy warm bed. Read, nap, take a swim in the lake 2min away, enjoy walks and explore the nearby village. There's a small kitchen but restaurants are 15min walk or 5min cycle (3 X provided) ride away. The caretaker has his own hut to give u privacy. A simple breakfast is free. U have the opportunity to plant a tree to offset u r carbon footprint too :-) Solitude is what I get a sense of when I am here. Hope you too find some peace and quiet, serenity away from Sri Lanka's city noise and chaos. The cabin is in quite a spacious bit of land, so you can certainly explore the trees and fruit, and observe from a distance the fauna - monkies, lizards, birds and hopefully NOT elephants who come into the reserve at night on rare occassions. Your children will love the place. You are in the middle of the wilderness, and Sri Lanka is in the tropics, so there are insects around. My advice is that you close doors and windows at dusk and that usually works. There are mosquito nets for all beds and a fan too. The cabin is in quite a spacious bit of land, so you can certainly explore the trees and fruit, and observe from a distance the fauna - monkies, lizards, birds etc. Its your home, for the duration of your stay, after all. When I am in Sigiriya, I would love to meet up with you. But my local friends will certainly help you in whatever way they can. But I am always contactable at all times. The place is about 15 min walk from the Sigiriya main road (20 min to Sigiriya Lion Rock), 5 min bicycle ride and a 5 minute tuk tuk ride. It is away from the street in a little village. It is near a beautiful lake that you can swim in and is absolutely stunning. There are three bicycles that you can use whilst you are here. There also bicycle hire places if you need more (bit overpriced at about 400 rupees a day unfortunately). Or you can just walk the main road, which is full of shops etc. My friend who looks after the place also has a tuk tuk and he will be happy for you to hire him for rides to nearby places. Please dont walk around at night as it is normal for even locals to stay indoors given the wild life (elephants). And you absolutely must carry a torch (flash light) when walking around after sun-set. There is a flashlight at the Cabin you can use. IMPORTANT: The place where my cabin is, sometimes you will see wildlife - but it is very safe. Animals such as monkeys, tortises, birds, insects, and very very rarelly elephants, snakes and mongooses you may see them in the distance. Please respect their day to day routine (mostly eating and sleeping) and observe from the distance. It is their home, more than it is ours. IF on the rare occasion Elephants wonder into the reserve, you MUST absolutely NOT approach them, take flash photography, try to take selfies, etc, They may be cute, but are wild animals and need to be left alone to be themselves, and do their own thing. Please stay indoors and they will simply eat whatever they can find and be on their merry way. It does have a small kitchen. It is self-catering. This was to give a sense of independence to eat in, and keep costs down too. However, if this is not your thing, we can certainly get some food purchased and delivered to you. There are take-away containers at the cabin for this purpose. Simple rice and curry from a local food outlet at local rates or from the many restaurants that cater to overseas visitors at the foreigner (unfortunately over -priced) rates. Entirely your call. Just let us know at least a few hours in advance. Anything we can help with, we would love to make your stay a memorable one. Last but not least - we know some of you are concerned about your carbon footprint. How would you like to offset that? We would like to give you the opportunity to plant a tree in the reserve during your stay. Let us know if you would like to do this. It would be a real pleasure to arrange this for you.
