The Whitehouse in the Forest of Dean

The Whitehouse is an extended traditional stone-built forest cottage located in the Forest of Dean village of Pillowell overlooking the forest. Two minutes walk from the front door takes you to an extensive range of forest tracks. Beautiful setting at any time of year. The cottage has 5 bedrooms (one with en suite bathroom) and sleeps up to 10 comfortably. There is a large garden on 3 sides and a double garage with further off-street parking for 2 additional cars. There is a huge living room/dining room with grand piano, 50" smart TV, large oak dining table (seats 10-12) and a games room with a full-size table tennis table. The kitchen (and adjoining breakfast-room) is well-equipped with an extensive range of crockery and cooking utensils, double oven, induction hob, microwave, dishwasher, fridge and separate fridge-freezer, coffee-maker, toaster. Utility room with washer-dryer. Beautiful garden with fruit trees, lawns and flower beds. Patio and outdoor dining area with a good range of garden furniture including a large circular wrought-iron table with parasol shade, folding gazebo and BBQ. All bed linen, towels, utilities inclusive. A travel-cot and 2 high-chairs are also available. In addition to the garage and off-street parking (can accomodate 3-4 cars) there is also free on road parking, although we ask guests to be sensitive to the parking needs of other village residents. The house is situated in the Forest of Dean, right next to the forest, which offers a wealth of outdoor activities including mountain-biking (family trail with cycle hire 2 miles away), canoeing and kayaking on the river Wye (Symonds Yat 4 miles away), a high wire forest adventure course at 'Go Ape' (2 miles), horse-riding, as well as an extensive network of forest trails. The forest of Dean has been populated at least since Roman times and is of great historic interest retaining vestiges of its varied past as a centre for charcoal-burning, iron and coal mining and forestry. It represents one of the largest tracts of historic forest in England with many varied broad-leaved and coniferous trees - some of them hundreds of years old. The area abounds in wild-life; highlights include peregrine falcons, goshawks, deer and wild boar. In the Spring, the forest floor is carpeted in some areas with magnificent displays of bluebells and other wild flowers. Clearwell caves are within easy reach as are the atmospheric ruins of Tintern Abbey. A steam railway operates from Parkend, about 1.5 miles walk through the forest from the house. The nearest pub and shop are about 1/4 mile away. Chepstow and Gloucester are within 30 minutes' drive, while Bristol can be reached within 45 mins-1hr. The nearest main-line railway station is in Lydney, approx 3 miles away. Further afield, the attractions of S. Wales are within easy reach (Brecon Beacons National Park is about 1 hour's drive away). The nearest station is in Lydney (about 4 miles away). Chepstow and Gloucester are 8 and 19 miles away respectively. Please note that beyond the extensive patio area, the garden is sloping down towards the road and that while it is enclosed by dry-stone walls and entrance gates, young children will need to be supervised.
