Pretty Thatched Cottage in Somerset
Kent's Cottage is situated in the lovely village of Lower Odcombe, set below the Iron-Age hill fort of Ham Hill. Our pretty two-bedroomed thatched cottage is Grade II listed and was built at the end of the 18th Century. Kent's Cottage was built in the 18th Century but has been recently refurbished, with a modern kitchen but still retaining its cosy characteer. It has an open coal and log fire, pretty bedrooms and a delightful garden. There is a gas Bar B Q in the garden The cottage is not suitable for disabled guests as there are many steps. The booking includes the whole house and back garden. There is no bath, but a new shower with rain drencher and separate hand shower. There are some beautiful houses to visit, as well as enjoyable walks, in this area. In the next village, Montacute House, an Elizabethan mansion with a National Trust Tea Room and Gift Shop, also has a long gallery of historical Royal portraits on loan from the National Portrait Gallery. You can walk through the park for a stunning view of the house, or drive into Montacute and park free in the grounds. Other Houses to visit include Forde Abbey, Barrington Court and Lytes Carey. Odcombe is situated at the foot of Ham Hill, the largest Iron Age Hill Fort in the country. There are lovely views, great walks and a pub at the top of the hill. The Jurassic Coast is half an hour away, with opportunities for fossil hunting. Bridport, with it's street market on Wednesday and nearby West Bay with its beautiful scenery, make a lovely day out. Lyme Regis has a great sandy beach and the fascinating Cob harbour wall. Sherborne, 7 miles away, is a beautiful Georgian town with with its main shopping street winding down to the lovely Abbey. Wells, Taunton and Exmoor are an easy drive. We love visiting Beer, Seaton and Sidmouth with its amazing Donkey Sanctuary (free to visit). Shopping at Street, a huge Shopping Outlet, is near to Glastonbury. A car is a necessity as it is impossible to get to Lower Odcombe on public transport. We have occasionally let the cottage out privately, and we previously had a 4 Star rating with Visit Britain. Close to the cottage is The Mason's Arms pub, renowned for good food (menu online) and it's own micro brewery.
