BEACHES OF SLOVENIAN ISTRIA: - PORTOROŽ BEACH (touristic town Portorož) is surrounded by grand seaside resorts and a wide selection of restaurants, shops and cafés with fresh Mediterranean seafood dishes and a strong Italian influence. The ritzy resort town and the sandy beach is packed from one end to another with umbrellas and sandcastles during the hot summer months. As one of the only sandy beaches along the Slovenian coastline, Portorož beach is one of the location in Slovenia to take a dip in the Adriatic Sea. - PIRAN BEACH (old town Piran) is a getaway for Slovenian locals to relax in the town of Piran, perched on the edge of a narrow peninsula jutting out into the Adriatic Sea. It is not a sandy beach, the coast is cleanly paved in concrete all along and has various facilities to ensure the most refreshing of swims. Stairwells descending into the sea allow for easy access into the water, and a romantic view of the Venetian and Austrian architecture in the historic town can be seen in the distance. - MOON BAY BEACH - STRUNJAN (Mesečev Zaliv Beach) is the hidden gem of the Slovenian Riviera. Is located inside the Strunjan Nature Park and so is a preserved area with crisp, clean water surrounded by protected wild animal and plant life. Locally known as the White Cross Beach (the Beli Kriz), because of the white cross which sits atop a large cliff that towers over the beach, Moon Bay is well off the beaten path and can only be accessed by foot. The journey to this private paradise is worth the extra effort; the opportunity to relax in front of a beautiful sunset to the sounds of rare wildlife all around is not one to be missed! - The small BEACH OF THE CITY OF KOPER is situated in the largest coastal town Koper. A charming medieval Old Town very close to the Italian border, Koper beach is a pebbly, classically Mediterranean beach. The Italian influence in Koper will have you wondering if you are soaking up the sunlight on the Slovenian Riviera or the Amalfi Coast;. The Koper marina and Koper beach, are just as relaxing and provide incredibly stunning sunsets in the summers. - SIMON'S BAY and IZOLA BEACH which means island, is another small and pebbly beach in the old fishing village of Izola, close by to Strunjan Park. Izola stretches out deep into the Adriatic Sea, and so the Izola beach provides incredible views of the Slovenian Riviera. The sunsets at this intimate beach are clear and colorful, as fishermen carry on with their duties just off the shoreline. Nearby, there is a picturesque lighthouse, and several restaurants which serve some of the best fresh seafood and local wines. - The DEBELI RTIČ BEACH/ THICK LITTLE CAPE is another hidden gem of the Slovenian Riviera. Is located in the city of Ankaran - very close to the Italian border. A pristine beach which has been awarded the Blue Flag of ecology. It is situated in a wondreful natural setting. Punta Grossa) is a cape in the northern Adriatic Sea on the border between Slovenia and Italy. It is located north-west of the Slovenian town of Ankaran, and west of the Italian town of Muggia. The name literally means 'Thick Little Cape'. Part of the cape is protected as a natural monument, which is also home to the only salt meadow on the shores of the Mediterranean sea. The natural monument area covers about 800 metres (2,600 ft) of coastline around the western edge, including the cliffs and the abrasian terase. - SLOVENIAN ISTRIA fascinates with its Roman, medieval and Venetian influences and the beauty of its nature. Old city cores, picturesque villages and cultural heritage invite you to visit. Here you can relax while exploring one of many landscape parks, nature reserves and other protected areas. Taste the salt from the Sečovlje Salina Landscape Park and enjoy the spectacular vistas that open up from the Strunjan cliff. RECOMMENDED PLACES TO VISIT: - NATURE PARK STRUNJAN The most characteristic part of the Strunjan landscape park is the 80-metre cliff composed of flysch forming a massive wall. A large white cross on the top of the cliffs overlooks Moon Bay with the most spectacular sunsets. Walking along the coast you will come to the lagoon with salt pans. The salt pans in Strunjan are both the northernmost and the smallest salt pans in the Mediterranean. When the weather is good, some of the outstanding vantage points offer views extending all the way to the Bay of Trieste and Mt. Triglav. - Maybe you drove INTO THE HINTERLAND in search of thousands underground caves, noble Lipizzaner horses, or maybe the delicious local food, Karst Pršut ham and the notable local Karst Teran wine. - THE KARST REGION behind the coast is carpeted with vineyards and olive groves, interspersed with peach and cherry trees and harbouring thousands of underground caves (the Postojna, Škocjan and Vilenica caverns are the best known). - Take a JOURNEY TO THE COUNTRYSIDE: Hrastovlje, roam the villages in the Šavrini Hills, venture to the Karst Edge or the valley of castles.
